NIGHT-PLAY COMPETITION.

CONTESTS TERMINATED.

The full-rink mixed sexes nightplay .competition on the local bowling green continues to be well supported, anl the keenest interest is taken each Thursday night. On the last occasion every rink was again occupied, sixty players taking part. 1 CompbtU tion was very keen, and at the conclusion of play it was found that the rifik skipped by A- Finnie headed the list, the total score for the fifteen heads being 22 points. The singles championship competition this year has been varied in that the elimination of contestants has been made by one and two-life sections in a series of rounds. The alteration has worked, admirably. The results are as follows :— Two-life Section. —W. Purdie 21, v. T. H. Hale 17 ; T. L- Williams 20, v. L. Gibb 18 ; W. N. Chamberlain a bye. Second round: . Wilkinson 13 ; Williams 25, v. Hamilton 11. Fifth round : Williams 21, v. Gibb 19. Considerable interest was taken in the final between Williams and Purdie, which was played l on Friday night. For the first four heads Wiliams ed to score and Purdie led by 4 pointsß! Williams took the next four (heads for 6, and on the eleventh head Ke had a lead of .1 point, the scores being B—7.8 —7. On the next ten heads Williams gained 4 points only, jvhile Purdie, who at this stage was playing almost perfect bowls, gained 7 points and ran out a winner by the 2 points, the final Scores being Purdie 14, Williams 12. On Purdie being declared the club champion for the 1927.-28 seaspn he was the recipient of hearty congratulations. In acknowledging the praise accorded him Purdie paid a tribute to the play of ihis opponent, who, he said, liad played a sterling game and had had hard luck in not winning. CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS. On Saturday afternoon Purdie journeyed to Waikino, where the- champion of champions of the Goldfields contest was played. The tournament, which was of a very interesting and highly successful nature, comprised the. champion singles player of every club affiliated with the Goldfields Association. The tournament jv.as won by Tony, of Waihi, who gained six wins and deserved the honour by his consistently good bowling throughout the contest.

PAEROA DEFEATS WAIHI.

On Saturday afternoon an eightring inter-club match was played on the local green between Paeroa and Waihi, and resulted in a win for the local club by 32 points. The visitors were formally welcomed by the president (Mt C. T. Mettam) and afternoon tea was dispensed by the wives of the 1 local bowlers.
