POLICE COURT.

PAEROA—THIS DAY.

DANGEROUS RIDING.

Ab the Paeroa. Police Court’ this morning, before Mr F. W. Platts, S.M., Cecil Tippins, Vogeltown New Plymouth, was charged with riding a motor-cycle in Belmont' Road, Paeroa, on December 19 last, in a manner dangerous to the public and contrary to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924. , There was no appearance of defendant.

In evidence Constable McClinchy stated that on the date of the information defendant rode through tile main street at a speed estimated at 40 miles an hour, the engine roaring like an aeroplane. When questioned he stated that .he was going at 30 miles an hour.

Sergeant D. L. Caljwell stated that defendant was on a visit to Paeroa and was willing to plead guilty.

A fine of £3 was imposed, with costs amounting to 12s.

THEFT OF TOOLS.

A labourer named Alfred Rubin Waldron of Tirohia, was charged with the theft of carpenter’s tools valued at £2 9s, the property of A- E. Surrey, in November last. He pleaded guilty.

Copstable McCl'.nchy detailed the events leading up to the offence, and it was shown that defendant had borrowed the tools to do some work at his home. He had rendered valuable service to his employer during recent heavy fires. He was a married man, and bore a good characttlr. Sergeant Calwell said that the policy did not press for a heavy penalty, although the defendant had done 'a foolish act in taking the tools. The magistrate said he was prepared to accede to the recommendation of the police, and defendant .had made reparation to some extent. He would be conv’cted and fined £2 and ordered to pay £l, being the amount of one plane. On the application of the police a v;eek was allowed in which to find ■the money. DRIVING WITHOUT LICENSE. Roy Bedford, farmer, Omahu, was proceeded against by the Paeroa Borough Council for driving a moth'-car within the borough in October last without being the holder bf a jnotordriver’s Evidence was given by the borough solicitor (Mr C. N. O’Neill) as to, the steps taken to ascertain particulars. Subsequent to the summons being served it was found that the defendant had taken out a license at the office of the Thames County Council. The action was the first one taken by the Paeroa Borough Council, and: defendant had' not thought it worth his while, to appear. Defendant was convicted and fined £l, with costs £1 13s. A WANDERING COW. J. J. Mathieson, butcher, Paeroa, was charged with allowing a cow to wander on a public street on February 12

A conviction was entered 1 , with a fine of 10s and costs £1 7s.

NO HEAVY TRAFFIC LICENSE. ' • Janies Harvey Evans (Mr R. S’. Carden), sawmiller, Paeroa, w,as charged with driving a motor-lorry on tiwo occasions within, the borough without having obtained a heavy traffic license in accordance with the Motor Lorry Regulations, 1925. Mr C. N.’O’Neill appeared for the Paeroa Borough Council and detailed the proceedings that jhad been taken to collect the fees. He pointed out that the council had showed the utmost leniency to the defendant who owed a balance of £42 in fees, Mr Carden stated that defendant had been “hard up againsjt it” for some time, and through no fault of his own had lost hundreds of pounds. Money was due to defendant, but through sheer hard luck he had not been able to meet all his obligations, 'it was not a case for a .heavy penalty, and while realising that it was difficult for the- magistrate to arrive at a decision, a special plea was made for leniency. The magistrate said that if defendant could not pay his license fees he should not be on the roads at all. He would be fined £2O on the first charge and. £2, plus' a penalty of £3, on the second information. Costs amounting to £3 2s were also allowed. One month was allowed iir which to find the mondy.
