A ROUGH TRIP.
S.S. WAIPU IN A GALE.
DAMAGE DONE TO 1 THE VESSEL.
The Northern Steam Ship Company’s Piako River steamer, s.s. Waipu, had an exceptionally rough passage on its first trip this week, and' at times! it was feared that the vessel, would be lost.
On leaving the lighthouse the full force of a stiff southerly gale was met, and the seas, were higher than Captain Raines had ever before experienced in tlie gulf. No headway could be made, and’ the vessel was carried to within two miles of Dead.'man’s Point, where a. temporary lull permitted the vessel’s head to be turned. Prior to this deck seats had been washed away, cargo shifted an<| a boom had broken adrift. The ship rolled sc much that at times the top handrails were under water, and once, when dangerously near the shore, the engines stopped as the steam pipe became full of water on account of the list.
The steamer was eventually able to beat back to the shelter of Ponui Island. On its arrival in the river tlie vessel and crew showed signs of the severe buffeting.
