INDUCTION OF VICAR.

BEV. MADDISON OF PLAINS. } SERVICE AT TURUA. The Rev. Daniel Maddison Was inducted to the cure of souls of the parochial district of Hauraki Plains at Turua on Friday evening. By direction of the Archbishop of the Diocese., the Most Reverend A; W. Averill, Primate and Archbishop of Zealand, who was too . ill to be the service was conducted by The Ven. Archdeacon Simkin, Archdeacon of Manukau, and he was assisted by the Rev. N. Robertshaw, vicar of Thames.

Maddison had made the required declarations and oaths oi allegiance the letters of institution were delivered to him by the Archdeacons, and the keys of the church, vicarage, and, school were handed ■°ver by the parishioners’ warden, Mr G. H. White and duly acknowledged as pledges of institution and of recognition by the parishioners. The order of evening service was then conducted by the new vicar. A very striking address was given by the archdeacon, who explained the nature of a clergyman's commission, his responsibilities to the people; and the responsibilities of the people to the priest. - • WELCOME SOCIAL. After the service a Social was held ( in the Turua Hall to welcome the ' vicar. Mr G. H. White, parishioners’ r jwarden and parish secretary, welcomed Mr Maddison and said that if he did only Just as well as the two previous vicars but stayed a little longer he would be voted a good fellow. The Rev. Charteris extended .a welj come on behalf of the Presbyterians and pointed out some of the .difficulties that the new vicar would experience. ■ The Rev. Hall spoke ini a similar strain, and on behalf of the Methodists welcomed the new-minister. The Ven. Archdeacon Simkin stated that he had been asked by Archbishop Averill to extend a welcome to the Maddison and to thank the people of the Hauraki Plains for all they had done during the stay of his son. The archdeacon said that the Plains was to be congratulated on its progressiveness, and he was in a position to state that no other district • in the diocese was causing less anxiety than the parochial district of Hauraki Plains. The Rev. Maddison thanked the peopie for their warm welcome back to ’ New Zealandv Prior to going to England <in furlough’ he had been vicar of Ohura for four years, and on one ; occasion had taken services at Turua 'and at Kerepeehi . Thus when he had received a cable asking if he would acept the Hauraki Plains, he had no hesitation in cabling an accepstance.
