THE LURE OF THE CIRCUS

It is astonishing the trail 'of attraction which, a circus carries with it wherever it goes. The exhibition on Wednesday last, although the widespreading canvass was pitched in a somewhat remote part of tlic town, attracted large crowds of enthusiasts tq see what was, within and how it worked. Personally I some who had come from as far as Whangamata and distant parts of the Hauraki Plains. Many men women, and children stood outside, considering whether or not it was worth the prices charged to see the spangled saddle-horses and riders. People patronised the circus on Wednesday who are Seldom or never seen at any other amusement, and many outside were not a little disappointed. They expected to see some attraction outside, but there whs nothing except the huge canvas on which to dwell the eye. There jwas not even a bartd 'jutside to play “Annie Rooney,” or ”A Long Way to Tiperary.” Everything there to be seen was within, and admission was confined to those with silvftr-lined pockets. Several mothers who had brought their children were disappointed because their offsprings did not see anl elephant outside or some ponies waiting their "turn” inside. Circuses as a rule take all. they can get for what they give ; not give all for what they get. Years ago there were several circuses travelling Australia and New Zealand—far ahead of present-day exhibitions, and. the prices charged were 3s, 2s and Instill, the lure of the circus will, ever continue to appeal to a large section, no matter what price is charged for admission,,
