THE WAIHOU RIVER.
DIFFICULTY OF NAVIGATION.
SHALLOW ABOVE PAEROA.
With the continuation of the prolonged spell of dry weather navigation of the Waihou River above Tirohia is becoming increasingly difficult. From the Ngahina wharf at Paeroa to Tirohia the rivei’ is subject to tidal influence, but from Tirohia to Ta Aroha the river is shallower than it has been for many years. About the Te Aroha wharf the greatest difficulty exists, and i£ requires much skill and judgment to berth the steamer Rotokohu and heavily-laden barges at that wliarf. The difficulty of navigation is also added to by the number of snags which have worked up through the river-bed.
Captain Aidlam, of the Rotokohu, has so far this seasion been able to run to time-table, but the. trip from the Puke to Te Aroha with barges occupies the greater part of twelve hours. The return journey is made ill a little under four and a-half hours. •
The river between the Ngahina Wharf and Turua is also particularly shallow in certain parts, but as it is subject to tidal action the s.s. Taniwha is holding well to time-table.
