HOBBIES.

GOOD FOR ELDERLY PEOPLE. GIVE A HOLD ;ON LIFE. At an inquest in England on a retired sculptor of 74 who committed suicide the evidence showed that he was a man without hobbies of any kind who had gradually lost all inter, efet in; life since he gave up work four years ago. Undoubtedly, as the coroner 's&id, it is a dangerous thing for elderly people, no longer in active employment, to be without some kind of, hobby or vital interest. Unless they have something to distract their minds they are apt to feel that existence is purposeless and thus to fall ready victims to-gloomy thoughts and even to illness. How often* do we hear of men who have survived their retirement for only a brief period, although they had always been vigorous- and' healthy while they remained in business. Everybody, therefore, ought to. cultivate some hobby or interest that will give him a hold upon life when His more strenuous days are over. The choice is so enormous that there is something for every taste and every purse. Many people, of course, are made happy in their declining years by entering into the lives of their children and grandchildrenWhere that is possible it ife*, indeed, the most satisfying of all the compensations and pleasures that old age can bring with it.
