His Lordship the Bishop of Waikato will give a course of Lenten addresses in.St. Paul’s Church at halfpast seven on every Wednesday evening during Lent, beginning on Wednesday of this week—Ash Wednesday. During Lent of last. year the the bisjhop delivered a series of sermons in the Cathedral on Sunday evenings, and these were so much appreciated by the people of Hamilton that the seating accommodation of -the building was taxed to the utmost on every occasion.. It is hoped that the church people of Paeroa will show their appreciation of the bishop’s action in coming here and giving them the opportunity of hearing what will undoubtedly be instructive arid helpful addresses by attending the services in, large numbers-,. s

The fjineral of the late Mrs Ellen Barrett, which took place at the Pukerimu Cemetery, Paeroa, on Friday afternoon, was largely attended, mourners being present fr'°im all parts of the district. The pall-bearers, Messrs D. A. Vincent, M.. Crosby, Eugene Shaw, and James Treanor, were all Paeroa boys and lifelong friends of the sons of deceased. The serviced at the graveside was con-' ducted by the Rev.. Father J. T. Taylor, who referred feelingly to the passing of a highly respected pioneer. •

Since the Paeroa Borough Council took steps to compel owners of vacant sections fronting the main street to tidy up their properties a. decided improvement has been effected. On several sections blackberry and other noxious weeds., representing years of growth, have been, cleared off and burned; hedges have been trimmed back, and a general clean-up carried out, greatly adding to the appearance of the town and being more in conformity with the improved condition of the main street.

The Public Works Department’s steam dredge is at present undergoing anhual overhaul and inspection at the Puke. When ready, the machine will resume dredging operations on the right bank of the Waihou River near the Netherton ferry. The electric dredge is at present engaged in dredging operations on the left bank of the river below Mr Carter’s property. The spoil pumped by the mar chines is being used for the stop-bank formation.

At the monthly meeting of the Hau 1 - raki Drainage Board on Friday last it was pointed out that the decision of the board at its special meeting on January 29 concerning the position of the proposed drain in the Opou district was from the Greenway-Loader drain to the southern boundary of, section 13, and not to the northern boundary, as stated in the minutes of the meeting and in the Press report, which was copied from the minutes.
