CORRESPONDENCE.
UNAUTHORISED EXPENDITURE.
£To _ the Editor.} Sir, —In your issue of the 13th., under the heading “Borough Expenditure,” it is reported that the Audi-tor-General requirdsi the sum of £l5 18s 9d to be repaid to the district fund account. This sum represents the amount by which the unauthorised expenditure of the Council for the year 1926-27 exceeded the limit. It is apparent from the report that the 'unauthorised expenditure, of the council over a period of years ;has been commendably low. Thle year in question, however, was, an eventful one for the borough:, and the Council is to be congratulated on carrying out its programme on the occasions mentioned in'such a creditable manner on the small .amount of expenditure that was involved. That the expense should exceed the limit set was inevitable if the borough was) to honour the events in a fit and proper manner. It is hardly fair, therefore, that the councillors should be asked to foot the bill out of their own pockets. The occasions which called forth the expenditure were borough occasions, and as sjuch should! be paid for by the townspeople. I suggest, sir, that the town clerk be asked to open an account at the borough office for the purpose of liquidating the amount required. I have no doubt if this course is| followed that all who are aware of it will take the trouble -to leave at or send to the borough l office a contribution to the fund.
ONE OF THE BURGESSES'.
