OLD TRAGEDY RECALLED.

SHOOTING OF A SURVEYOR. DEATH OF THE SURVIVOR. A tragedy, which occurred on the Pirongia ranges on'. November 28, 1870, is recalled by the death in the Waikato Hospital last week of an old man named John Peacocke, aged 79. Peacocke was acting aS) cook for a surveyor named Todd in the latter part ,of 1870. Todd pitched his camp in the bush on Pirongia, afid was engaged in surveying portion of the range. He had previously been ordered off by an irate Maori, but paid no heed to the warning One day. later, however, the native crept up to the tent wherein Todd and Peacocke were resting, and shot the surveyor dead. Peacock® crept under the tent wall and escaped into the bush. The native was finally brought to justice.
