UNEMPLOYMENT.
WORK FOR AUCKLAND MEN.
PUBLIC WORKS OPERATIONS.
That the large pumber of unemployed men in Auckland City has been exercising the minds of the Gov»ernment is well-known. In order to provide some measure of relief the Public Works Department has decided to find employment for about 300 men from Auckland immediately. Advice was received On Friday afternoon by Mr O. G. Thornton, district engineer of the Public Works Department, Paeroa, to this effect. About a week ago at the request of the Minister of Public Works, Mr Thornton forwarded certain estimates for reading wprk in the district under hisi control, and now l instructions have been received that the estimates have been approved and the work is to be commenced right away.
In conversation, however, Mr Thornton made it clear that at the present time unemployed men from Auckland City only w.uld be placed on the relief works. Included in the work to be undertaken is the metalling of. the TapuCoroglen road ; formation work on Whangamata-Hikuwai road; formation op Colville-Port Jackson road ; and formation on the Coromandel. 1 Whangapoua road. These undertakings, which Will all, be handled through the Paeroa office, will in all probability provide work for the next three months at least.
