PAEROA BOROUGH.
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING.
ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held last night, His Worship the. Mayor .(Mr W. Marshall) presiding over Crs. E. Edwards, J. W. Silcock, H. J. Ha;re, E. A. Porritt, and Mr W- C. Alexander (town clerk). REFUND OF WATER RATES.
A request was, received from a, Paeroa solicitor acting for Mrs M. D. Shaw for a. refund of water rates. He also, advised that heir shop property in Normanby Road had been unoccupied since July, 1927. The water charges had been paid up to March 31 next, add the council was asked to consider remitting a portion of the charges.
On the motion of Cr. Hare, seconded by Cr. Edwards, it was decided to remit a portion of the charges. GOOD FRIDAY PICTURES.
Application was made by the proprietor of the Aurora, Theatre for permission to screen a suitable picture pogramme on Good
Cr. Hate said he did not see that there would be, much harm in showing a picture on that night. The Mayor said that other businesses had to close, anti, in the interests of public morals a,nd opinion he thought the application might reasonably be refused. There were a great many other days, and ways for pleasure, arid in any case the Churches objected. He moved that the application, be declined in the; interests of the public and not from personal reasons. The resolut’on was, secorided by Cr. Edwards and carried. CONFERENCE OF DELEGATES. The Municipal Association of New Zealand wrote advising that the 20th annual conference of delegates would take place at Nelson on March 14 next. Affilliated local bodies were asked, to forward the names of* delegates, and pointed out that each local body yas entitled to one votin/g delegate, with a. population of under 10,000 persons.—Received. FENCING OF SECTIONS. A letter was received from an Auckland solicitor, acting on be half of the Coote Estate, and acknowledged receipt of. the; council’s notice to fence an unoccupied section at Paeroa. Objection was taken to paying Isj 6d a foot for fencing, but an offer was •made of 30s a chain, or as an alternative, a lump sum sufficient to cover half the cost of erecting the fence on.a 30s per chain basis.
The Ohinemuri Club, Paeroa, als,o lodged formal notice of objection to erecting a fencq on the swimming baths site, on the lines, required by the council.
To Cr. Silcock the Mayor answered that , the cost of the fence would be about £3 a chain, but a post and wirq fence did not appear to be suitable. He moved that: “The council considers the counter proposals! of post and wire fences for; tow!n lots to be qtttt’e i - tmsuitiible that - Without * prejudice we offer to accept one shilling a foot, this being less than half. ;tli< cost of a five-foot paling fence ; that the offer remain open for fourteen days, and that the whole matter be left in the hands of the. baths committee, with full power to act.” TASMAN FLIGHT FUND. The Mayor of. Wellington (Mr G. A. Troup) advised that in accordance with a general wish a committee of citizens had been set up to organise an appeal for the dependants of. Lieut. J. R. Mpnfrieff and Captain, G. Hood, who gave their lives in a gallant endeavour that New Zealanders might have; the credit of being the first to fly the Tasman Sea. Sir Harold Beauchamp and others have been appointed to act as ti'ustees for the fund, which, it was expected., would subsequently be handed over to ,the Public Trustee to administer.* It was, felt that the appeal should be national in scope, and with that view the cooperation of. the, council was sought in. making an effort to. give persons in the town who desired to contribute an opportunity to do so. Inquiries had been made into the circumstances of the dependants, and it had been found that both widows were left unprovided for, and that Lieut. Moncrief had left an aged mother without any means of support. On tlie motion of the Mayor it was decided to open a subscription list, and that the council donate a eum of £1 .Is. ...
In seconding, Cr. Porritt stated that the A . Company, Hauraki Regiment, had opened, a subscription list, and at the time it had .been done it was not known that the matter was. to be made a Dominion-wide one.
The Mayor said that asi local, and provincial lists had been in circulation, it vvas doubtful if the response would be great. However, undoubtedly the; cause was a very worthy one, and as such people might regard it as a privilege to subscribe.
