THE WEATHER.

LIGHT RAIN AT PAEROA. HEAVY DOWNPOUR IN DISTRICT. There was a change in the weather locally over the week-end, but the rainfall was very light. Shortly after 5 o’clock on Saturday night there was a light shower of rain, which was insufficient to l.ay the dust. Apparently the rain brought the smoke from the buslh and swamp fires lower down in the heavens as the sun' was veiled by smoke clouds and the atmosphere was very heavy and oppressive. Later in the evening several heavy claps of thunder were heard over on the eastern horizon, but no rain to speak of fell locally during the night. Yesterday afternoon several light showers fell at Paeroa, but the quantity measured only the smallest fraction of an inch. There has, been no movement in: the barometer since Thursday morning, and it remains steady at 30.09. This morning the thermometer registered' 70.2 degrees in the shade. From reports received, heavy rain fell- 'Jiri various parts of the district yesterday afternoon. At Waitawheta and Owliaroa a tropical deluge was experienced which lasted about an hour, while there was also very heavy rain at Waikino and Waihi. At Patetonga, and also at Mangaiti and Komata, the settlers have reason to be thankful for the heavy rain which fell in those districts. Thunderstorms passed over the Hauraki Plains on Saturday afternoon and yesterday afternoon, but on each occasion; the amount of rain that fell "was very small. On Saturday it appeared to be raining south of the Plains, aiid on Sunday* rain) fell 'west of the county.
