CYCLE RACING.

PAEROA ATHLETIC CLUB SPORTS.

GATHERING AT THE DOMAIN. The cycle-racing and athletic sports on the local domain on Saturday was well patronised by the public. The weather was perfect, but the prolonged spell of dry weather had caused the track to become very hard and bumpy in places. The public was accorded an interesting period of racing, and the fact that some of the leading cyclists in the Dominion were competing added interest./ During the concluding stages of-the first heiat in the twd-milc race S. Hayes, skidded on the bend opposite the big willow tree and fell inwards. Before he could get his machine clear R. F. Coulton, of Te; Aroha, rode over the top bif him and came a nasty spill. Both men received cuts and bruises, but Were able to compete in later events. The bicycles were extensively damaged.

The big race of the day (five miles) was won comfortably by W- Mackie, of Christchurch, from 100yds behind scratch. It was a thrilling race, and the winner was warmly applauded. The cycling points prize .Was won by W. Mackie with 13 pplints, and C. Tippins, 8 points, and S. McCann, 7 points, both of New Plymouth, were second and third respectively. The ervenits provided for the school children made variety in the programme and were well supported. Following are the details :— CYCLING EVENTS. One Mile Cycle Handicap.—First heat: W. Godkin, Te Aroha (180yds), 1; W. K. Francis, Papakura (120yds), 2 ; C. Chisholm, Paeroa (180yds), 3. Second heat: H. Alexander (180yds), 1; C. O’Brien, Karangahake, (140yds), 2 ; A. Pilkington, Te. Aroha (120yds), 3. Third heat: W. Renouf, Hamilton (135yds), 1; T. Russjek, Tapu (200yds), 2 ; 0. Stace, Te Aroha (100yds), 3. Fihal: H. Alexander, l l; .W. Renouf, 2 C. Chisholm, 3.- Time, 2.20.

Two Miles Handicap —First heat: J. H. Harcourt, Hamilton (scr), 1; Francis (190yds), 2 ; Godkin (260yds, 3. Time, 5.15. Second heat: Alexander (250)yds), 1; N. Keajley, Auckland (200yds), 2 ; S. McCann, New Plymouth (40yde behind), 3. Times, 5.7 1/-5. Third heat : C. Tippins, New Plymouth (35yds), 1; M. J. Handrup, Hamilton (140yd5),2 ; O. Stace (120yds), 3. Times 5.6. Final: Tippins, 1; Randrup, 2 ; Stace, 3. Time, 5.0. Half-mile Handicap (beys under 16 years).—J. Jesney, ' Waikino, 1 ; D. Hayes, Paeroa, 2 ; L. Wilson, Nfetherton, 3. 1

Three Miles Handicap.—S. McCann (60ydsi behind), 1; W. Mackie (70yds behind), 2 ; J. H. Harcourt (scr), 3. Times, 7.35. One Mile Handicap (boys under 17 years).—M. Rackham, Karangahake', and H. Sorensen, Paeroa, dead heat, 1 ; M. Irwin, Paeroa, 3.

Five Miles Handicap.—W- Mackie (100yds behind), 1; C. Tippins (100yds), 2 ; S. McCann (80yds behind), 3. Time, 13.39. Won by fourl ength's. Eleven started but only five finished. Harcourt and McCann received punctures. Mackie,’ who finished' quite freshly, received a great ovation.
