THE RAINFALL.

LOCAL FIGURES FOB JANUARY. A DRY MONTH RECORDED. Meteorologically, the monith of January, 1928, will long be remembered locally. The rainfall, was so small that it could be measured only by the' most delicate gauge. A record has been established for lack of rain, and according to records supplied by the local office of the Public Works Department it was the driest month experienced for many years. Rain fell on two days only during the month, namely, on January 23 (O.Olin) and on Monday last (0.02 in the total for the month being 0-03 of an inch. The recorded amount for January, 1923, was 6.31 inches; January, 19®4, 2.76 inches; January, 1925, 1.75 inches ; January, 1926, 4.7oJnches ; and January, 1927, 1.30 inches. . The barometrical reading was exceptionally high during last month, the average reading being 30.20. Thei thermometer averaged 63 degrees in the shade, and the prevailing wind during the month was northeasterly. . ; The whole countryside ils already beginning to feel the effects of the prolonged dry spell, and a steady downpour of rain would be particularly beneficial. i THE PLAINS FIGURES. • LIGHTEST MONTHLY FALL. The official rain, gauge for the Hauraki Plains at the office of the Drainage Department, Kerepeehi, registered .01 of an inch for the month of January, the lowest fall in any one month since 1912.
