PAEROA DOMAIN.
MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Domain Board was held on Thursday night, the chairman (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over»Messrs P. E. Brenan, E. Edwards, F. E. Flatt, J. W. Silcock, E. A. Porritt, H. J. Hare, and W. C. Alexander (secretary-; SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. The following report was submitted by the domain superintendent, Mr W. Hamilton :— “Since my last report my time has been mainly occupied in the general maintenance and preparation of the greens and the mowing of grass. “As mentioned in one of my previous reports the growth of gorse on Primrose Hill is becoming move marked, and the present is the most opportune time for cutting it. I would; suggest that the outstanding groups of gorse be cut at the roots with a sharp adze, and the gorse itself then mown with a scythe. This would in time cause the gorse to die out.
“During the last two or three months I have had a number of. inquiries from visitors to Paeroa who have asked the situation of tire domain, and whether it is-private property or not. I would like to suggest that one or two notice boards be erected in prominent parts of. the domain or even uppni the outskirts of the domain, notifying the people aind visitors; to Paeroa that it is a public domain.”
The chairman said that the gorse had decidedly got a good hold, and he was afraid the job of eradicating it would now be a big one. He, had hoped the board’s finances would have been sufficient to permit Of something being done. ■ It was suggested by Mr Flatt that if. the new growth was scythed off and then burned it would effectively check the spread, and clean the area up. . On the motion of Mr Brenan, the superintendent was authorised to take such steps . as he considered necessary to co-pe with the noxious weeds. In seconding, Mr Flatt ■ said that something should be done right away to, check the growth of gorse, which was fast becoming a menace. ERECTION OF SIGNBOARDS. With reference to the erection of. signboards to indicate that the domain was a public one, the chairman said that strangers*to th town might easily think the domain was private property, and he considered that the boards should be supplied ;as soon as possible. On the recommendation -of Mr Erenaiin it was also decided to erect a board directing women to the cloakroom. On the suggestion of Mr Flatt the matter of erecting suitable boards, probably at Mackay and Arney street entrances, was left in- the. hands of the chairman and superintendent, with power to. act. COLLECTION OF TREES. It was stated by Mr Silcpck that his attention ihad been drawn by two visitors to Paeroa to an article that had appeared in the Auckland Press relative to the unique collection of trees at the domain. He thought that publicity of such a nature was decidedly helpful to the town. Mr Edwards agreed, and said that the article referred to had first appeared in the “Gazette,” and it'had been read with interest. USE OF DOMAIN. .The Star of Paeroa Druids Lodge wrote applying for the uSe of the dpmainl in which to hold a children’s picnic on February 18. In the event of a cricket match being in progress on that afternoon, the committee ■would use the No. 2 ffootball field. The application was granted. The Paeroa Athletic Club wrote applying for the use of the domaiin and permission to make a charge for admission on February 4.
On the moton of Mr Edwards it was decided to grant permission, subject of the payment of a rental of £2 10s.
