HAURAKI PLAINS TENNIS.

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. THE TOURNAMENTS. The Hauraki Plains Tennis Association met at Ngatea, the vice-presi-dent, Mr E. A. Mahoney, presiding over Messrs, W. W. Averill (Turua), J. Nicholson (Kerepeehi), M. O’Connor’ (Kaihere), and A. R. Vowles (Hopai), honorary secretary. WILLIAMS SHIELD MATCHES, The secretary reported that four days after the date fixed for the receipt of challenge® for the Howell- ■ Williams Memorial Shield competition a challenge had been received from the Hikutaia Club. It was decided that the matter of giving Hikutaia a chance be left to the discretion of the winners of the competition. It was decided that the final of tfhe Howell-Williams Memorial Shield eliminating round between the Kerepeehi and the Patetonga clubs be played on January 14 1928, at Kerepeehi. Mr Averill notified that the Kerepeehi challenge match with Turua would be played on January 21, at Turua. THE TOURNAMENTS. It was decided that the association’s tournaments commence on February 11, 1928, and that the entrap dose-on January 28. In reference to the programme Mr Vowles advocated introducing championship' w combined doubles, in place of ladies doubles championship, vfhich had been very poorly supported in previous years. This alteration was adopted, and the entry fee for this event was, fixed 4ft 4s; In all other respects the programme will ba as in previous years. Mr Vowles alsp advocated introduce ing a consolation tournament for those players defeated in the first 1 round of the singles, tournaments. It could be run in conjunction with both the ladies and the gentlemen’s championship, and handicap singles. It was agreed that such a tournament be held in connection with the handicap singles, provided there were 30 entries for the men’s. handicap singles and 20 entries for thq ladies’ handicap singles; The drow would be made on the courts at the completion of. the second round. The eptry fees were fixed at 2s 6d • for men and Is 6d for ladies. AN EXECUTIVE COMMITTED. In order to deal with urgent matters not of a contentious nature Mr Vowles suggested the appointment of an executive sub-committee to obviate; the calling together of the delegates from all the clubs. This would necessitate an alteration of rules; Mr Mahoney gave notice of motion accordingly. MATCH AT AUCKLAND.

’ Mr Vowles brought up the matter of sending a team to Auckland to play in the outer-suburban competition with the idea of establishing the grade of the Hauraki Plains, players. The manager of the Auckland team which visited Ngatea recently had expressed the opinion that the stand-; ard of play had improved to such an extent that it would bcj very probable that the Maura]® Plains could win the ' outer-suburban competition. Should this eventuate, the Plaint could try for the Auckland Association’s B grade competition, and thus determine its status. The chairman and secretary were empowered to make all arrangements. DELEGATE AT AUCKLAND. Mr Vowles reported that Mr E. L. Griffiths had suggested that the Plains Association should utilise its privileg? of appointing a delegate to the Auckland Tennis Association. It had been suggested that an Aucklander be appointed. -A man suggested by Mr Mahoney was appointed subject to his acceptance. PLAYERS’ EXPENSES. In accordance with notice, given, Mr Mahoney moved that no expenses be paid to travelling representative players by the association. This was seconded and supported at length by Mr Averill and carried. PAYMENT FOR In connection with thei long-stand-ing dispute, Mr Averill moved, in accordance with notice given, that the Turua Club be paid the sum of S 3 at the rate of £1 per court for the use of its courts for the Thamesi-Plains match last season. This was seconded pro forma by Mr Mahoney, who intimated that he intended to move a fjurther motion later. The motion was carried, and on Mr Mahoney’s motion it was decided that no precedent be thus created, and that in future no hire be paid for courts unless arrangements had been inade by the association. |
