ANGLICAN CHURCH.

SITE AT NGATEA SELECTED.

CANVASS FOR FUNDS

Members of the Church of England community at Ngatea assembled at the Ngatea Tea-rooms on Monday evening to further the project to erect a church. The vicar, the Rev. W. W. Averill, presided. The vicar reported that two sites had been under consideration. However, the owner ef thei suggested site in the township had not replied to letters, and thus he could not be considered any longer. There only remained the corner section in Mr JDarlington’s subdivision, just about opposite Mr A. Zberg’s residence. The area was slightly under a quarter of an acm and Mr Darlington had reduced the price to £lOO. It was decided to accept this site and to thank Mr Darlington for the reduction made in the price. The secretary, Mr E. A. Mahoney, was instructed to write to the Diocean Church Property Trust Bojird and ask it to take the necessary steps to acquire the section.

The vicar reported that Mr W. G. Hayward had promised to donate £25 towards the cost of the land. The Ladies’ Guild had about £lOO in hand as the result of the recent bazaar, and the Ngatea Church Building Fund had a credit of about £3OO.

Mr Hayward was accorded a vote of thanks for his donation. The vicar mentioned that it was not to be understood that the building was to be erected at once. That was a matter to be discussed. The diocesan architect had supplied two plans of churches, but it appeared that the cost would be more than could be afforded. However modifications could be made when it was known wh<jt amount could be expended.

The opinion was expressed that a big debt on the church was very undesirable, and that the building should not be commenced until there was at least £5OO in hand. This view was endorsed, and it was agreed that a canvass fpr funds be made immediately. Miss Dent was appointed treasurer, and the following wetfei appointed to canvass: Mesdames Birkenhead, King, McCarthy, Wylde, Irwin; Messrs Mahoney, Basham, Foster, and Hayward. A further meeting will be .held on Monday, December 19.
