RIFLE SHOOTING.

FORMATION OF PAEROA CLUB. MEETING TO-MORROW NIGHT. There appears to be little doubt that there will be a rifle club formed at Paeroa at an early date. With that purpose, in view a. meeting of those interested is convened for to-morrow night at the Drill Hall. The .requisite number of names to form a club (20) have already been handed to the organiser, and these;, together with several Territorial officers, n.c.o.’s, and men, who are also eligible to join as honorary members and enjoy all the privileges of the, club, augurs well for the, success of the local club. With reference to ammunition, it ■may not be generally known that this is the first year that the use, of Mark VII. (pointed nose bullet) ammunition has become a universal issue. Hitherto Mark VI. (round-nOse bullet) has been issued to rifle clubs, and Mark VII. to Territorials. The Mark VI. ammunition was certainly more, accurate up to and including the 600 yards range when fired from the long rifle generally used by rifle clubs, but Mark VIL, now on issue, gives as equally good results with the- S.M.L.E. (short service) rifle. The, position brought about by the change in ammunition , therefore, places Territorials on the same level as members of rifle clubs in regard to accuracy of, weapons, and also reduces very considerably the expense to young members who are keen to take up the sport. Members who will require to purchase] rifles may do so through the club from the Defence Department for the sum of £3. These rifles have been used previously, but are fitted with new barrels, body, and bolt-hqad. Paeroa is fortunate in having in its midst Captain H. Simmonds, exchampion rifle-shot of the Dominion, who has taken up the work of forming a rifle club here most enthusiastically. He has expressed his intention, when the club is formed, of giving his best service and assistance to rifle shooting in Paeroa and district.
