The proposed levying of the petrol tax has no doubt been the cause of dealers increasing their stocks lately. Within the last few days the auxiliary scows Torea, Pono, and Paroto have brought 3000 cases of benzine from Auckland to the Ngahina wharf, Paeroa. The benzine was consigned to dealers at Paeroa, Waihi and Te Aroha.
The heavy rain experienced during the last 12 .hours reveals a large, number- of small holes and indentations on the new bituminised surface of Normanby Road in the vicinity of the Aurora Theatre,. The weak places have worn through on the centre of the street, where the heavier and most constant motor traffic occurs.
In common with the rest of the Dominion, the annual examinations held under the auspices of the Education Department commenced to-day. Paeroa has again been recognised as an examination centre for pupils attending the local and Te Aroha district high schools. There are 17 pupils sitting locally for»the Public Service Entrance examination, one for Senior Free Place, 11 for Junior National Scholarship, and 10 for Junior Free Place. Candidates taking these examinations are drawn from as far away as Ngarua. The department’s examinations conclude on November 25, and will be followed by the N.Z. University examinations. The number of candidates sitting at Paeroa this year is about equal to the number who sat last year. The examination room is the; detached wooden building at the local high school.
During the month of October the total revenue received by the Thames Hospital Board amounted to £2645 2s Id, including a sum of £269 3s 6d which represented payment of patients’ fees. Accounts amounting to £llB4 16s 4d were passed for payment, leaving a credit balance of £1460 5s 9d.
The Finance Committee reported at Thursday night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council that the money required for the various loans authorised had been made available by the Public Trust Office under satisfactory arrangements, and a settlement .could probably be effected bef<4e the end of the, present month. To enable the work in hand to proceed, the committee recommended a definite overdraft limit of £3500 be applied for. This was agreed to by the council.
Tenders, closing on Wednesday next, November 23, are, invited for the erection of municipal swimming baths at Paeroa.
At Thursday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council a circular was received setting but the aims and objects of the newly formed County Clerks’ Association. Generally, this was to promote uniformity and to suggest amendments to the Counties Act. On the motion of l Cr. Mayn it was decided to approve of the movement, and co-operate where possible. Cr. Mayn commended Mr E. A. Mahoney on being appointed to the executive, of the association.
A clearance sale of a whole; dairy herd of .choice Jersey and Jerseycross cattle is to be held on Friday by thq N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., at their yards at Ngatea.
