DISTRICT NEWS.

NGATEA. SCHOOL MATTERS. The committee of the Ngatea District High School met on Monday evening, Mr W. McDuff presiding over Messrs. G. T. Davidson. C. S. Foster, R. Burke, W. Lawrence, J. Baker,’ and E. C Barriball, secretary. The; headmaster (Mr W. Chappell) was also in attendance.

In reference to complaints rece'ved at the previous meeting of children being kept put in the rain, the matter being deferred for enquiry, the headmaster reported that the teacher pn playground duty had reported that no children had been out in the; rain. It was decided to reply accordingly to those parents who had compltined.

In connection with the overcrowding of the bus from Waitakaruru the secretary reported that the bus driver was not prepared to put on a larger vehicle,-'flu; would run an extra service from Rawerawe Road for 5s a day. This offer had be.en forwarded to the Education Board. It was decided to hold a school concert on December Bth for the purpose of raising funds for furnishing the teachers’ common room, and other purposes.

Permission was given the, Presbyterian Ladies Guild to hold a. garden party in the school grounds. The headmaster asked for the sanction of the committee, of a motto which ’ had been sheeted for the school. This was “Each for All,” and the idea was to inculcatq the idea of helping others, and of subordinating self for the benefit of otheirs. The chairman said he had much pleasure in moving that the committee approve and sanction the motto. This was supported by Mr Foster and carried, and it was decided that the approval of the Education Beard be sought. The headmaster mentioned that the banner on which the, motto had been embroidered was utilised as an attendance banner. It was placed in the room with the highest average attendance during the previous wqek, and had already created keen competition.

Several matters in connection with improving the schoolgrounds were dealt with.

A comprehensive scheme of improvemejnts, including garden plots, paths, and asphalting, was submitted by the headmaster, and it was agreed to modify the committee’s, ground improvement proposals to fall in with the details of the scheme outlined and to appeal to the people at a later date for funds to continue the work. KEREPEEHI. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. Trophies and medals won by Kerepeehi schoolboys were; presented at a dance arid euchre tournament in the Kerepeehi Hall on Monday evening. ’ At 6 p.m. the members of the school J Rugby football - team were entertained to a sit-down tea by members of the Kerepeehi Ladies’ Hockey Club. After tea there was a children’s romp and dance until the adults dance commenced. During the evening the Terrill Cup

for inter-school competition was pre-

sented by the; president of the Rugby Union, Mr H. Dent, to. Master T. Baggs, captain of the, Kerepeehi team. Mr J. Terrill, donor of the cup, also spoke.

The medal for the most improved footballer, donated by Mr A. G. Kneebone, was presented by Mr Dent to Master Trevor Carr.

There was a good attendance of adults at the dance and euchre tournament. The music was by Mr Ludlow’s Orchestra, and Mr N. Clay was M.C.

After the; supper adjournment Mr J. H. Nicholson, president of the Hauraki Plains Hockey Association, and the Kerepeehi Ladies’ Hockey Club, presented Miss Myrtle Courtney with the medal donated by Mr A. G. Knee,bone for the best all-riound hockey player. He then presented the progressive euchre tournament prizes to Mrs King! and Mr Hollis, and the booby prizes to Mrs Boswell and Mr Tipa.

The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss M. Courtney and Mr B. Thompson.
