PAEROA FIRE BRIGADE.

ANNUAL MEETING. The local fire brigade from last night, when it held its annual meeting, enters upon its thirty-third year of seivice to the community. Those years have seen- the evolution from the, IWrse-drawn manual pump, via the man-drawn hand-reel to the modern motor-tender. Conversation with the

older members reveals acts of sacrifice and heroism that are never made known except by chance, and of which the general public are in total darkness. Early reminiscences bring back many laughs, which reveal the happy sense of humour with which the fireman is blessed and with wh’ch he makes light of his arduous duties.

The election of officers resulted in a show of undivided confidence in the present staff by returning them each unopposed. Superintendent W. J. Moore, a fireman of 32 years’ standing, has held the leadership of this brigade for over 20 years, and Fireman Ward, the senior fireman present, in installing the; superintendent, congratulated him and expressed best wishes for further good health and long life. The deputy-Superintendent, E. Moore, and the foreman, H. Wilton, were congratulated and charged tc carry on with the same spirit as had characterised their past labours. The youngest officer, Secretary C. W. Malcolm, was warmly praised for the outstanding work and keenness he had shown during his te-rin of office, and it was hoped that the “powers that be” would see fit to leave him in the town of Paeroa for a great many years.

The brigade will shortly take advantage of daylight saying to enter training hree or four nights a week.
