A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.
GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING.
PAEROA SHOW ARRANGEMENTS.
A meeting of the general committee of the Hauraki A. and P. Association was held at Mr Bain’s rooms on Friday night, the president (Mr HJ. Hare) presiding over a fair attendance. SPECIAL PRIZES. The secretary reported that donations of 24 prizes had been received from Auckland merchants, six from Thames business people, and ten from Paeroa but the canvass had not been completed, and there was Waihi yet to be canvassed. The action of the secretary in acknowledging the donations was endorsed. USE OF SHOW RING. A letter was received from the Paeroa Athletic Club asking that the association leave its show-ring intact, on the understanding that the club would remove same and return the material after the sports meeting on December 17. It was proposed to survey and peg out the cycle track prior to the show, but later the pegs would be removed and whiting substituted for the show day. Permission was also sought to display a calico sign on the showground. On the motion of Mr Buchanan it was decided to accede to both requests. SALE OF YARDS. Several letters were received from
the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency . Co., Ltd., .Auckland, relative to the saleyards, and it was advised that the matter had been referred to the company’s head office, Wellington. SELECTION OF JUDGES. The lists of official judges of the various breeds of cattle and horse? were perused and a sufficient number of names selected, the secretary being instructed to write inviting them to adjudicate; at Paeroa. With reference to the Ayrshire cattle classes, the selection of a judge was left in the hands of the president and secretary, with power to act, after an idea as to. the number of entries had bean obtained. A similar arrangement was made in the pig classes. WORKING BEES. The question of holding working bees was considered, and it was decided that the ring be erected on Sat-
urday, December 3, and that a man be employed to clear up the yards. The offer of Messrs D. Sheehan and E. L. Shaw to obtain brush for the fences and cart the hur.dles was accepted with thanks. ANNUAL “SMOKER.” The question of holding the annual “smoker” was considered at length. The president said that last eyar the function had been poorly attended, and the majority of members took little interest In it. It was suggested by Mr G. Buchanan that arrangements might be made for entertaining the judges and exhibitors at a picture entertainment. The majority of the people interested in the show who desired to spend an evening in Paeroa would appreciate a quiet rest after a busy time at the W one-day show.
In reply to Mr J. A. Reid the secretary said the cost of the smoker was about £lO annually. On the motion of Mr J. P. Findlay it was' resolved that the matter of entertaining be left in the hands of the president and secretary, with power to act.
The president said that, personally, he was loath to abandon the “smoker,” but after last year’s experience he thought the expense and trouble were not justified. The resolution was carried, Mr D. Sheehan asking that his vote be recorded against it. He contended that much good came from the “smokers,” and he was opposed to any alteration.
