In accordance with the wishes of His Majesty the King, on Friday next, Armistice Day, a solemn silence of two minuteg will be observed, beginning at 11 a.m. and a. signal is to be fired from Primrose Hill to commence and end the; period. Citizens are earnestly urged to observe the two minutes’ silence.
An unusually severe earthquake was experienced at Paeroa shortly after 10.30 q’clock on Monday night. The shock was- preceded by a loud rumbling noise, and lasted several seconds. Residents, especially those in two-storeyed buildings, state tli it the tremour was one of the worst ever remembered locally. Some people were considerably disturbed, but fortunately no damage has been reported. Paeroa is not subject t,o earthquakes, and it is some years since the, last severe one was felt.
At the Magistrate’s Court, Paeroa, on Monday, before Mr F. W. Platts, S.M., judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases : Wells and Sons v. T. A. Reid, £l3 17s 6d, costs £2 16s ; P. Williams, Ltd., v. E. Gooding, £2 12s 4d, costs 13s. T. Bradley was ordered to pay J. F. Carter £lO 5s forthwith, in default five days’ imprisonment, warrant to be suspended so long as debtor paid‘three equal monthly instalments, first payment- to be made on December 7.
While carrying out final rolling ■operations on the south side of Norin anby Road above the Arney Street intersection on Monday afternooon the local Borough Council’s steam roller became embedded. The occurrence was extraordinary, as the roller had passed over that spot many times and no weakness in the crust had appeared. It has not yet been definitely determined what caused the hole. The roller was extricatejd with difficulty, and the size of the subsidence can be gauged by the fact that a lorry-load of large, spawls was required to fill up the hole.
In order to cope with storm-water and to provide adequate drainage, \he. Borough Council is constructing a 12inch piped drain from the south side of Normanby Road near the transformer across Fraser Street to the Ohinemuri River. The work, which is being done in connection with the reconstruction of Normanby and Waihi roads, will link up with an existing open drain on the -north side of the road, and should provide a solution to the, problem of coping with the surface water in that area.
On Monday last, the first working day under the Summer-time Act, and also local Court day, the two Paeroa policemen came out looking spick and span and wearing their white helmets with nejw silver badges in front. As it was the first time these helmets had been worn this season a resident facetiously remarked something about “forcing the summer.” Although fine during the day, heavy rain fell locally during the night and at intervals yesterday.
While acting as one of the umpires in the Paeroa A versus Te Aroha B cricket match at Tej Aroha on Saturday afternoon Mr T. C. Arnold, of Paeroa, received a painful cut on the forehead. The ball was thrown in hard by a player from the outfield and Mr Arnold, who was looking into the sun, did not see it coming. As a result he received the injury referred to. Although dazed for a few moments Mr Arnold was able to carry on his duties after a short retirement.
