Shortly after 11 o’clock this morning a well-known Paeroa. youth was arrested by Constable McClinchy on a charge of the alleged theft of a reeislered letter, containing money, the property of his- employer. It is also probable that further charges of theft may be preferred when the case is taken before the Court.

At the Police Court, Paeroa, yesterday morning, before Mr G. P. Lamb, J.P., a young man- named Walter Waddell alias William Anderson, a labourer, was charged with drunkenness in Normanby Road on Wednesday evening. He pleaded guilty. It was stated by Constable McClinchy that it was .defendant’s first appearance for drunkenness; but he was well known to the police;. In reply to the Bench defendant said that he did not consider he was very drunk, and he was willing to leave the town immediately. A conviction was entered, with a fine qf 10s.

Of a total sum of £9802 4s 7d collected by the Salvation Army’s selfdemial appeal in the Auckland province, Paeroa contributed £145 ss, Waihi £172, Thames £278 13s 9d, and Te Aroha £3BO.

The following vital statistics for Paeroa for the, month of October have been supplied by the local legistrar (Mr W. E. Ward), the figures in parentheses being for the corresponding month in 1926: Births, 6 (7) ; deaths, 3 (2) ; marriages, 1 (1).

On Monday next His Lordship the Bishop of the Diocese will again be in Paeroa, and. will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to a considerable! number of candidates in St. Paul’s Church at 8 p.m. The bishop will be welcomed by the parishioners, after the service, in the Parish Hall, and those who are present at the service are invited to take this opportunity of meeting His Lordship socially.

The Presbyterian Sunday School is holding its anniversary on Sunday next, when there will be special recitations, and items by the children.

Mr Murrell, representing Balfour M. Irvine, F.S.M.C., London, sight-testing optician, Auckland, notifies that he will be visiting Paeroa next week, and may be consulted at the Paeroa Hotel.

A slight alteration to the 9.30 a.m. Waihi-Paeroa train from Monday next is advertised in this issue by the Ra’lway Department.

A writer to the Thames Valley Electric Power Board made a claim for the loss of a cow and a. horse, which are- alleged to have died through eating paint used by the board. The chairman stated that the board had engaged a. veterinary surgeon, who stated that a post mortem revealed no trace of paint. A claim had been lodged for the surgeon’s fee. Cr. Thomas contended that the board had a weak case, as the advice, was received for the board’s protection. Cr. McCormick : I thought that we got the engineer for our protection.

From Monday next when the .Summer Time Act comes into force, most of the schools on the Hau.raki Plains will commence at the same, time as at present, which will be an hour later by the clocks when advanced. The Turua School will commence on hour earlier than at present as this will suit the buses better, and the Kopuarahi school will commence at 10 a.m., advanced time, instead of 0.30 a.m., standard time, as at present.
