PAEROA ATHLETIC CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING.

SPORTS ON DECEMBER 17. The annual meeting of the Paeroa Athletic Club was held in Mr Bains rooms on evening, the president (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over Messrs H. Tamms, C. McNamara, E. Moore, J. M. Fox, D. S. Kerr, JWilson, J. Walmsley, Dr. Smith, and K. L. Slyfield. ANNUAL REPORT.

The annual report was read as follows :—■

“Thq presentation of the second annual report of the club, embodying the first sports gala, is, in the view of your committee, distinctly encouraging. Eleven meetings of the management committee have been held during the past year. Owing to the temporary absence of the chairman, Mr T. M. Wilkinson, this office was held by Mr J. Walmsley. “(On December 11, 1926, the initial sports gala of the Club, in which £lOO in prize money and trophies was offered, proved a successful venture. Good fields, resulting in keen competition, and public enthusiasm and fine weather led to a good crowd of spectators and established the popularity of the Club’s sports meeting. The Samuel Cup, donated by the patron, Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., and offered for primary schools’ relay race competition, was won by the Paeroa Public School.

“Your committee wishes to place on record the. willing support and keen interest of a large band of sympathisers. The success of the initial sports meeting was in no small measure due to public interest and support, both prior to and at the meeting. “Your Club was represented at the annual meeting of the Northern Athletic Union by Mr G. A. Bush, of Te Aroha. The date of the second sports gala, Saturday, December 17, has been approved by the union.

“On the eveining of March 17, 1927, a fireworks display by the Wainoni Fireworks Co., Christchurch, and arranged by the Club, attracted a large crowd to the Paeroa Domain. Through this effort the sum of £l5 6s 7d was equally divided between the Children’s Dental Clinic fund and the Club.

“On Thursday, September 1, 1927, the second annual grand concert of the Club was held in tihe Aurora Theatre. Through public patronage, and the support of a band of enthusiastic artists this, effort benefited the club to the extent of £9 2s lid. The credit balance of the club stands at the sum of £37 Ils, as against £34 Is lid at the beginning of thq season. “Thanks are due to Mr W. Bain for the? use of his rooms, to the patron, Mr Samuel, for a silver cup, to the Press for reports of meetings and general publicity of the Club’s efforts, and to the band of concert -artists who assisted with tihe 'concert.

“In conclusion your committee confidently places, the Club’s position before you. feeling that the Paeroa Athletic Club is steadily becoming recognised as ‘on the map’ of athletics. ” The balance-sheet showed a credit oof £37 11s, the, receipts being £286 4s and the expenditure £248 13s. Walmsley: secretary and treasurer, Mr K. L. Slyfield; auditor, Mr W. L. Lawrence; hon. surgeons, Drs. Smith and Little ; management committee, Messrs T. M. Wilkinson, J. Wilson, H. Tamms, J. M. Fox. Discussion ensued concejming the track and arrangement of working bees. The track on the local domain is recognised as the best in the district and with- extra work this season it should be excellent. After discussion, the following motion was carried concerning the Athletic Unions: “That this meeting views with regret the fact that the Northern Athletic Union has* not come to a satisfactory arrangement with the N.Z. Athletic and Cycling Union, and confirms the advisability of an all New Zealand Union.” In consideration of his services, the secretary was voted £5 ss. The management committee decided to hold a meeting next week to draw up the programme for the sports.
