THE LATE MR JOHNSTONE • THE FUNERAL The funeral of the late Mr R. Johnstone, who was, drowned in the Ohinemuri River near Waikino on Saturday last, took place on Monday afternoon. Leaving St. Paul’s Church, Paeroa, where a short service was held, the cortege proceeded to the Pukerimu Cemetery, where the last solemn rites were performed by the Rev. F. C. Long. As deceased was an ex-member of the Royal Navy, and saw considerable service during the war, he was accorded a military funeral. Twelve members of the local senior cadet company, with Staff-Sergeant-Major A. Stewa-rd, M.M., in charge, paraded at the entrance to the; cemetery, and as the body was taken through the gates presented arms, and afterwards marched with arms reversed to the graveside. At the conclusion of the service the firing squad fired a volley over the grave and the Last Post was sounded by Bugler W. Parry. The pall-bearers were selected from workmates,- of the deceased’s at Waikino, and the large; number of Wai.kino and Karangahake residents who attended the funeral, together with the beautiful floral e,mblem% bore testimony to the respect in which thedeceased was held in the community.
