SWIMMING BATHS.

TENDERS TO BE CALLED AT ONCE PROBABLY READY THIS SUMMER. The matter of the, erection of the Paeroa swimming baths was advanced another step at the Borough Council meeting on Thursday night, when the following report was submitted by the Baths Committee :— “Plans and Specifications. —Your committee, has pleasure in placing before the eounc.il plansi and specifications for the proposed swimming baths. It has gone closely into these, and after several meetings minor alterations have} been decided up. We are now of the opinion that those placed before you will come within the authorised loan and meet the wishes of the ratepayers and public generally.

“Proposed Right-of-way through Ohinemuri Club’s Property.—This has been gone into with the Club’s committee, and we desire to thank them for their offer of assistance in the matter. However; after thoroughly going into, details we are unanimous that an entrance from the main street to the baths is an unnecessary expenditure. The main entrance is shown in Princes Street, and users will, not, to any extent, need to go out of their way to gain access via that street. “Tenders.- You will notice that the specifications call for tenders in two sections. One for the excavation only, and the other for fencing and building the baths. One aspect iegarding the excavation should, we think, be taken into consideration. Men w'lho are now employed on relief work will, in a short time, be out of employment; also several horses and drays idle. To relieve the unemployment it is recommended that the council may, instead of calling tenders for the excavation, consider going on with this portion of the work with day labour, and only call tenders for the bath and fencing. Suitable arrangements have been made for dumping the spoil.

“Inspection of Works. —The specifications make; provision for the borough to appoint its own inspector of works. This we consider as very important, as the class of building to be erected must be provided with the best of material and workmanship. “Finance.—Providing the Finance Committee; can make the necessary arrangements, and this report, along with plans and specifications, is adopted by the council, we ask for authority to immediately call tender's and proceed with the work. “We desire the council to place on record its appreciation of the assistance ■ given to the Baths Committee by Mr Burmestei", architect. He has supplied plans and specifications free, and will, when the work is in progress, occasionally make an inspection.”

The council went into committee for the purpose of discussing the report, and on resuming in open council the report and recommendations were adopted.

It was resolved that the- council record its thanks and appreciation to Mr G. L. Burmester for valuable services gratuitously given. On behalf of the council, the Mayor extended thanks to the committee for the work done. Many difficulties had been overcome, and the committee had made every endeavour to finalise matters as speedily as possible. The resolution was seconded by Cr. F. E. Flatt. In acknowledging the tribute the; chairman of the committee (Cr. J. W. Silcock) said that the committee had been elected to the job and had tried to do its best. He urged the. immediate provision of the neecSisary finance-, and added that every endeavour would be made to have the baths ready for use; before the summer was far advanced.
