Police-Sergeant D. C. Calwell, Auckland, who has been transferred to the Waihi police district, was farewelled by the bench and bar at t.he Auckland Magistrate’s Court on Monday. A tribute was paid to the sergeant’s fairness and impartiality in conducting cases by Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., who wished him good luck and rapid promotion. On behalf of the legal profession Mr A. Moody said that, the standard of prosecutions in th© .Court had always been very high, and Sergeant Calwell had had his part in making thdm so.

Prior to the commencement of business at Monday’s meeting of the Thames Hospital Board the chairman (Mr W. E. Hale) mentioned with regret the passing of Dr. D. B. Walsh© at Auckland recently. He said that deceased had rendered loyal and efficient service during the time he had beqn medical superintendent at Thames. In moving that, the board forward a letter of condolence to the relatives the chairman added that the late Dr. Walshe had been the most popular medical man in the district. Thq resolution was carried in silence, the members standing.

While motor-cycling near Pokenb on Saturday last Mr and Mrs W. P. Wylde, of Ngatea, were involved in a nasty accident as a result of the breaking of an axle. Mr Wylde had his left collar-bone broken and Mrs Wylde received numerous bruises; and scratches.

A commencement was made with the bitumen spraying of the first coat on the northern side of Normality Road this morning. Commencing at the intersection with Belmont Road, an area of about 800 yards, has been closed to traffic. This area was th )r--oughly swept yesterday, and J t is hoped to complete spraying th© ’first coat this; morning. Following the spraying, a coating of Matatoki quarry chips is to be spread, and when the whole area is covered the second spraying will be commenced and a second layer of chips applied. The .street will then be thoroughly rolled by the steam roller. With reasonably good fortune it is hoped to complete; the 800 yards by to-night and have the area open for traffic to-morrow. A second bitumen-spraying machine, with a rotary pump, has been borrowed from a neighbouring local body, and with the two machines in full working order and an increase of staff it is hoped to do from 1600 to 2000 yards of road-spraying and dressing a day. Owing to the. illness of the borough foreman the, supervision of this work is bein’ undertaken iiy the Mayor. Fine, weather is a big factor in the success of the work and the progress made.

The Railway Department advertises in this issue particulars of time-table alterations on the Frankton-Thames line' operating on and after Monday, October 17.
