CROQUET.
OPENING OF PAEROA CLUB.
PRESENTATION TO SECRETARY.
The official opening of the Paeroa Croquet club took place on the lawns on Saturday afternooon. The weather was fine, and there was a large gathering of visitors, including players from Matamata, Waihi, To Aroha. Hikutaia and Thames.
In a few well-chosen words the president Miss M. Dawber, extended a hearty welcome tp the visitors, and in thanking them for their attendance expressed the hope that they would spejnd an enjoyable afternoon. The president then drove a ball through the first hoop and amidst hearty applause declared the lawn open for the 1927-28 season.
The players were then arranged into two groups and th© afternoon was spent playing progressive croquet. At the conclusion of the play prizes were presented to Mrs Pearson (Thames), winner of the “A” group, and to Mrs W. H. Alley (Hikutaia), winner of the. “B” group. A competition arranged for non-players was won by Mrs H. Poland. PRESENTATION TO MRS- TAYLOR. During the afternoon the president took the opportunity of making a, presentation to Mrs? G. H. Taylor, who has been the club’s secretary during the past four years. In handing Mrs Taylor an electric reading-lamp Miss Dawber referred in eulogistic terms to the splendid and untiring services the recipient had given over a long term. Much of the; success and pleasure enjoyed during past seasons had been due in no small measure to the energy and enthusiasm of the secretary. and it had been the unanimous wish of the members to show in a tangible form their appreciation of Mrs Taylor’s efforts. The presentation was made to remind Mrs Taylor of the club’s indebtedness and appreciation.
In response Mrs Taylor thanked the members for their handsome gift, and said that she was, too taken by surprise to find words to express adequately her feelings. However, she was very grateful to them all, and what little she had been able to do had given her genuine pleasure, and it would always be her aim to do what she could to promote the happiness and progress of thp club. (Applause,)
The players expressed themselves as being well pleased with the condition of the lawn, and with an increased membership the prospects for the ensuing season appear very rosy.
