Just as we were going to press news was received that. Mr Alex. R. Aitken, engineer,' residing at Karangahake, died s-uddenly at Waihi this morning. It is understood that deceased went to Waihi this morning for the purpose of having some teeth extracted, and from the meagre information available it is, believed that he died-under the anaesthetic.
For the five vacancies on the committee of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club caused by the deaths of Messi’s E. Shaw and A. McGuire and the retirement by rotation of Messrs. Grace, Barrett, and Vuglar, lie following have been nominated : Messrs J. J. Barrett, M. Crimmins, E. Edwards, T. Grace, J. }V. Silcock, H. Spinks, A. Steedman, W. J. Towqrs, and T. P. Vuglar.
The old post office building at the corner of Willoughby and Victoria streets, after doing duty for thirty years, is now in course of demolition by the Public Works Department. The residential portion of the building is to be altered and renovated, and when completed is to serve as a police constable’s residence.
The Public Works Department’s two suction dredges have now linked up the right stop-bank, thus completing both stop-banks to within a few chains of the Puke side of Netherton. This week the dredges were moved down the Waihou River, and the electric dredge is now working at a point opposite the Netherton cheese factory, and the steam dredge is working opposite Fisher’s Road, both machines concentrating on the right stop-bank.
The Thames Jockey Club has received a permit to hold its- meeting on the Ellerslie Racecourse on October 29 and 31. In granting the; permit Sir Maui Pomare, Acting-Minister of Internal Affairs, stated that the permit was issued on the distinct understanding that the Thames course is to he used next year after being put in order.
Police-Inspector J. C. Willis, of Hamilton, was in Paeroa on Wednesday afternoon on departmental business.
Sportsmen are reminded that t e annual meeting of the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Socie.ty is to be Held at Mr Bain’s Rooms to-morrow night at 8 o’clock. Members and intending members are invited to be present.
