EASTERLY GALE.

ROUGH WEATHER ON SATURDAY.

NO DAMAGE REPORTED,

A severe easterly gale prevailed locally on Saturday. The morning dawned fine, but a stiff wind "’as blowing, and later occasional showers of rain fell. After mid-day the wind increased to a gale, and torrential ■rain fell during the afternoon and until late evening, when conditions moderated a little. In less than twelve hours the OliinOmuri River rose over six feet, as registered on the gauge at the Criterion bridge. Fortunately no damage was done to the new traffic bridge, in course of erection, as every precaution was taken in anticipation of a big Hood. Naturally, with the river in a fresh a large amount of debris including a dead cow, collected round the piers of the bridges and the barges. The rubbish was removed without difficulty yesterday morning. For the 24 hours ended 9 o’clock •yesterday morning .68 of an inch of rain was registered at the local office of the Public Works Department, so, obviously, the rainfall was, greater in the Waihi district.

The; barometer has risen one point since mid-day yosterday, and is now steady at 30.15.

With the exception of a fence being lowered and minor damage to shrubs and gardens no serious damage has been reported.

During the height of the gale on Saturday, about 8.45 p.m., the electric light failed in a portion of the borough. The cause was a broken insulator and a loose wire at the transformer in Normanby Road. Repairs wcjrc effected and light restored by the Power Board’s gang within ten minute.-., of the break occurring.

Yesterday morning the wind changed to a westerly direction, and with the exception of one or two slight showers the day was fine, with intervals of bright sunshine.
