NEW CONFIDENCE TRICK.

MONEY FOR RELATIVES.

SWINDLED ON LINER’S DECK.

Just before the Anchor liner Came-

ronia sailed from New York for Mb-

ville and Glasgow, James Hannan, a W/ farm labourer from Toronto, Ohio, U who had taken passage in the tourist cabin, was swindled of £lB by a man who had met him in the morning in an eating place in West Street. Hannan was standing on the upper deck aft when the man hasteped., up the gangway and said: “ Thinking about you gping to Scotland made me remember my poor old >,u. father who keeps a pawnshop in $ Sauchiehall Street near the Bromielaw. He’s not doing too well, and I want you to take this hundred-dollar

bill to him from me.” Producing what looked like a hun-dred-dollar bill he handed it to Hannan, saying, "Put it with your own money, and I know it will be quite safe.”

Hannan took from his pocket £lB in English bank notes and wrapped the bill around them and returned the roll to his pocket. “ Thank you old chap,” said the man, and he started down the gangway. Suddenly he turned and said: ■ Gracious I I was forgetting to give you the letter which has my father’s address on it. Add this to the bill.” The farmer from Ohio produced his □ttoney again and the man put the letter with it and ostensibly returned the packet to Hannap’s pocket. The man bade him a quick farewell. Later Hannan took the package from his pocket, but found neither the English bank notes nor the £2O > bill, but only some newspaper clipTpings. The £lB was all the money he * Thad to spend in Scotland he said. :
