The monthly sitting of the Paeroa Magistrate’s Court, and also the quarterly* meeting of the Ohinemuri Licensing Committee, will be 'held at the local Courthouse on Monday.
The local registrar (Mr W. E. rd) advises the following vital statistics for Paeroa for the month of August, with those of the corresponding month in 1926 given in parentheses: Births, 6 (7) ; deaths, 2 (2) ; marriages, 1 (1).
Revenue from all sources received by the Ohinemuri County Council during August amounted to £1226 6s 2d. Accounts totalling £1209 4s were passed for payment at yesterday’s meeting of the council.
An application by Cr. W. F. Johnstone for 100 yards of metal for the Old Te Aroha Road from the> Long Swamp upwards was granted at the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council yesterday. In seconding thelesolutjon Cr. Mace said that the road was used by a good number of settlers, and it was in the interests of the life of the road that it should receive attention as soon as the weather permitted of carting.
The problem of the menace to the roads, and the traffic thereon, of the large open drains through the township of Ngatea seems-to be becoming overcome by the enterprise of thebusnissmen, who are beginning*to recognise that it is a good proposition to pipe the: drain on their frontages and make a roadway thereon. The cost of maintenance of bridges is overcome for all time, as also is the danger of their land slipping into the drain, while the drivers of cars prefer to stop where there is less chance of their cars being bumped than on the sid? of the narrow road. The drain has been piped in front of two offices and two shops:, an d pipes are now being made for two more shop frontages. The Hall Committee is also considering a similar improvement.
Reference was made by the- chairman (Cr. H. M. Corbett) at yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council to the< fact that included in the names of the nine councillors were those of Mace, Mason, Morris, and Morrison, and he fe-lt “Shaw” that with able “Hands” good' work should he done for the ratepayers.
A common trait of many subscribers to public libraries is pointed out by the librarian of the Ngatea Public Library, who contends that newly purchased books are always in demand, no matter whether they wore first published many years; ago, while recently written books are ignored as soon as their covers become worn. The Ngatea library contains over 500 books, and most of them are modern, but as many of the covers have become soiled there is> a constant cry for new books.
There were five interments at the Pnkerimu Cemetery, Paeroa, during last month, and two sections were sold. The fees totalled £8 10*.
Attention is drawn to an interesting announcement, appearing elsewhere in these columns, relative to the business of Messrs. Frank G. Williams and Co*
