DRAIN WORKERS ON THE PLAINS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir—l was, greatjy surprised at a statement appearing in your issue of Mbnday, 22nd inst., that “Employers of drainers on the Hauraki Plains admit that generally the Austrian workers give the most satisfactory service.” I cannot believe that the board members would make such a. remark, as they know there are many Britishers who have been engaged in drainage work since before the formation of the first board and whose work has always been satisfactory: and the present board cannot deny that, during their short term of existence, the Austrians have been repeatedly sent back over their work- before it was passed. When it is considered that every eligible man engaged in draining and similar work on the Plains was a member of the N.Z.E.F., while Austrians who were working here at the time had to be interned, it is hard to understand any Britisher making such a damaging statement against our local workers; and it should either be proved or publicly withdrawn.
