CIGARETTE MAKING.
A MARVELLOUS MACHINE. TURNS OUT 2000 A MINUTE: A cigarette-making machine capable of turning out 2000 cigarettes a minute is one of the marvels which will be shown at the eighth Tobacco Trades Exhibition, whch will be opened at Olympia, Kensington, London. This machine is: all British, and cigarette-makers throughout the- country are awaiting the first, public show with great interest. The cost of erection at Olympia for one week will be £3OOO.
The exhibition, the largest ever field in Britain, will be opened by Sir-Bruce Porter, who will give an address on the effect of smoking on health. A great feature of the exhibition will be the Empire tobaccos, of which there will be a special series of exhibits. Every Dominion and Colony will contribute. Speaking of the improvement in cigarette-making machinery, one of the organisers of the exhibition said to a reporter : “The day of the handmade cigarette has passed. The- one reason they were preferred was that they did away with dust and stalk, but the new machines are almost human in their perfection, and can make a cigarette infinitely better than bJ hand. The increase in smoking has put such a strain on machinery in general in the tobacco trade that breaking point has almost been reached, so that the new machine we are showing comes at an opportune moment.”
