HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council was held at Ngatefj yesterday, Cr. E. L. Walton (chairman) presiding over the following : Crs. C. W. Harris, W. Madgwick, C. W. Parfitt, H. H, Hicks, .J C. Miller, J. A. Reid, A. L. Fisher, J. F. - Jjfayn, the clerk (Mr E. A. Mahoney), and the engineer (Mr F. Basham). TENDERS. Two tenders were received for the construction of a bridge on Mangatnrata Road and other work in the neighbourhood of Coxhead’s filling. It was decided to call fresh tenders for the separate part- of the work. t MANGATARATA BRIDGES. The resident engineer, Public Works Department, wrote advising that it wpuld be advisable to nefrain from definitely letting the contract for the renewal of bridges at Mangatarata until definite authority was received to expend the State money. The chairman reported. that two tenders had been received for the work. It would be unfair to hold the tenders until the contract could be let. It was decided to return the tenders. KEREPEEHI BLOCK RATING. Further to previous correspondence, the Department of Lands wrote suggesting that as a means of reducing the rates on the Ker epee hi Block to enable the lessee to carry on, the - council should collect the (hospital rates and write off the other rates-. If this was done the department was prepared to reduce the drainage rates to an amount equal to those on a valuation of £1550. The council considered that the department should reduce the valuation of the block and not interfere with the rating. SANITARY INSPECTOR.. The Department of Health wrote instructing the council to formally appoint Mr G. C. White its sanitary inspector.—Appointment made. RED METAL GUARANTEE. McCallum Bros, wrote confirming their guarantee with reference to the laying of 2% miles of Pekapeka Road with 12 inches of reid metal of approved sample. The guarantee wai| ‘ for three years, providing adequate '• maintenance wqs done at no greater cost than that of adjoining roads, and if at the end of three years the red road was not in as good or better order than the adjoining roads- laid with blue metal or shingle foundations the firm would bring the road up to the standard of the adjoining roads at its own expense. Tn the event of a dispute the matter was to be referred to arbitration. The agreement has been forwarded to the Highways Board for approval. PIAKO RIVER, WHARVES. The chief drainage engineer, Mr R.
G. McMorran, wrote advising that his
recommendations had been forwarded to the Secretary for Lands, who * wmlfi communicate with the council at an early date.
TE KAURI DRAIN BRIDGES. The lands drainage engineer, Kerepeehi, wrote to ascertain the council’s view on the width of the bridges over the Te Kauri No. 1 drain on the Turua-Netherton and Huirau roads. The plans submitted by the Drainage Board were for 16ft and 14ft bridges, whereas the standard widths were 13ft 4in and 12ft, though 18ft and 16ft were preferable for two-way Abridges. i The council agreed to adhere to its .previously stated decision.
