PAEROA RUGBY UNION.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The weekly meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union Committee was held in Mr Bain’s rooms on Monday evening, the following being present: Messrs W. T. Mettam (chairman), J. M. Crosby, H. M. Shand, J. Pinder, T. Royal, C. H. Potter, and R. Hodson (secretary). MATCHES WITH THAMES.
The Thames Rugby Union wrote submitting dates for home, and 'home matches, September 10 at Paeroa and October 8 at Thames.
Mr Crosby said that the Thames union had been very good to Paeroa, and had always, sent forward good teams. He thought that this union should try and fit in with the dates suggested.
Mr Pinder thought that the union should not pay any regard to the Thames Valley Union, and should not stand for any hindrance when it came to deciding dates, for matches. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Crosby, it was decided to accept both dates submitted. CURTAIN-RAISER. The offer of the Piako Rugby Union to send a third-grade team to pi a Y Paeroa in a curtain-raiser game at Paeroa on August 6 Was accepted. CLEARANCES. A clearance was granted W. C. Rick, a West player, to the Te Kauwhata club on account of his leaving Paeroa. A clearance was ?lso granted JCatlin from the East club on similar grounds. PEACE CUP. A letter was received from the Thames Valley Rugby Union, forwarded from the Hamilton Rugby Union, advising that owing to the Hauraki Pla.ins not being able to play for the Peace Cup this season the winners of the Paeroa v. Piako game would now require to play Hamilton on September 3 next. Mr Pinder moved that the Paeroa Union withdraw its challenge. He contended that it would be a waste of money. In reply to Mr Potter the chairman said that the union had challenged Thames only for the Peace Cup. Mr Potter seconded the motion, which was carried. TENDERS FOR CARS. Tenders from three local taxi proprietors were received for the conveyance of a team to Te Aroha on Saturday next. Several members’ spoke of the High prices submitted, and it was contended that the players would have to he prepared to travel in a cheaper manner than by motor-car. On the motion of Mr Pinder, seconded by Mr Potter, the tenders were not accepted. The secretary suggested that other arrangements might be made. Paeroa was required to travel only once more. After a lengthy discussion it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Messrs Crosby and Shand, with power to act. Mr Crosby was appointed manager of the team. The manager ' appointed for the junior team was Mr Royal. ENTERTAINMENT OF TEAMS. The question of entertaining teams invoked some discussion. Mr Crosby said that the proposition was a big one, and there were some unfavourable features in connection with taking teams to hotels. He thought sufficient hospitality could be accorded visiting teams by taking them to local teiarooms. He was of the opinion that unions affiliated with the Thames Valley Union should meet together and go thoroughly into the question. In addition l to the heavy expense entailed in going to hotels some of the players were not always as well conducted as might be. On the motion of Mr Crosby, seconded by Mr Potter, the secretary was instructed to interview a certain local tearoom proprietor with a view to accommodating the Te Aroha team on Saturday next. PLAYING AREAS. The condition of the playing areas at the domain was discussed. A suggestion was made that the matches on Saturday next' might be played at the ground at the railway settlement. The grounds at the domain were disgraceful last Saturday, and the speaker said he would sooner see the game go to Netherton than be played under similar conditions.
Mr Pjnder objected to changing the grounds.
The chairman said he was inclined
to agree with the last speaker, still, it would not be possible .to play on the domain if there was a great deal morel rain.
A sub-committee comprising the chairman and Messrs Crosby, Pinder, and Shand was set up to go into the matter and to arrange matters if the weather was unfavourable. HALL FOR TRAINING. The question of using .the Drill Hall for training was introduced by the secretary. He said fie was tired of going up to open the hall when only about half a dozen men turned up night after night. A suggestion was made by Mr Pinder that a greater number should be selected for each and such members only as turned out to practice be allowed to play. He contended that several men were playing on their reputations. It was decided to engage the Drill Hall for to-night, and that the selectors be interviewed on the matter. DRYSDALE CUP COMPETITION. A notice of motion was given by Mr Crosby as follows: “That all rules pertaining to the Drysdale Cup be rescinded.” The mover said he thought that it was desirable to get down to bedrock, as a very good job had not been made of the rules and trouble might arise later on. The. chairman agreed, and said Ire thought that it was a matter for the whole union to discuss. As one of the sub-committee which had drawn up the rules Mr Pinder said they had done their best. It might not have been a very good best, still the rules were accepted by the union. The chairman pointed out that certain events had cropped up which necessitated amendments to the rules, and he agreed with the suggestion to rescind the whole lot and appoint the full committee to go into the matter in the elvent of the motion being carried after the next vote. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £l7 4s 2(1 were passed for payment. SERVICES APPRECIATED. Hearty votes’ of thanks were accorded Messrs C. H. Potter, F. T. V. Johnson, G. Sale, and T. C. Arnold for conveying the schoolboys to Waihi on Saturday last.
In returning thanks Mr Potter said that the schoolboys, were his “long suite” and it gave him pleasure to assist them at all .times.
