PUBLICATIONS.

BOOKS OF FICTION. LATEST LIST TO HAND. Four books, which are included in Messrs Hodder and Stoughton’s famous list of fiction are to hand. “The Story of the Cowboy” is not exactly .a novel, but it reads like one. It portrays the life of the true cowboy in the development of pioneer days and gives many detail® of his life hitherto untouched. Lovers of Western romance will find much to interest them in this publication. Another very readable volume is “The Music Master,” by Charles Klein. Anton von Earwig, typical of the great musicians which Germany has produced, is introduced as the leader of the Leipsic Philharmonic Orchestra. At the height of his fame, when his conductor's baton was as a magic wand, his- pretty wife deserted him for a wealthy American who had been given the freedom of von Earwig’s home and had posed as a friend. In his story the author plays upon the heart strings right through, and the- closing chapters a.re written in a masterful way. The book can be recommended to all. It shows us that side of German character which, since the war, we have almost lost sight of.

Miss Ostenso has just released her first novel, “The Passionate Flight,” and in this she has shown her abilityto be ranked amongst the writers of the day. Her characters are unusualj, and the publication will be read witlf eagerness from the first to the last page.

Any story by George A. Birmingham can be depended upon to provide plenty of laughter, qnd ‘‘The Grand Duchess” is f no exception. This clever and very entertaining writer has evolved a volume with some most unusual characters, but all are endowed with a fund of humour of varying quality. Dermot Roche is the most likeable, and the author has created a character here that will live long in the memory of readers- of “The Grand Duchess.”
