Farmers on the clay portions of the Hauraki Plains are experiencing an undue amount of foot-rot in their herds at the present time. Herds on the peat are not affected. While the cause is attributed to ergot from the hay, the indications point to the abundance of mud. The dredge, which for, many montns has been engaged in» constructinng a canal ,f:rom the Maukoro-Waitakaruru canal towards Ngatea, along the: route of the proposed Pa.eroa-Pokenp railway line, for the purpose of procuring spoil for the railway embankment, has now returned to the main canal. This move may not be significant, as it is only cleaning up the old cut, possibly for the purpose of obtaining further clay for the. canal bank road. The coal is carted to the dredge in tlie summer-time, and it takes some months for sufficient consolidation to take place to form the road.
