The Local Government Loans Board sas notified the Paeroa Borough Council that the sanction of the Minister of, F’inance has been given to the £2ooo' loan for the relief of t'he unemployed. Exemption from the requirements of the Local Government Loans Board Act of 1926 was also granted in the cases of the Criterion Bridge and Swimming baths loans.
Several cases of pneumonia are reported on the Hauraki Plains. The sufferers are all children.
At the Paeroa? Borough Council meeting last night a vote of sympathy was passed to Mr E. W. Porritt in his illness, and the hope; was expressed that he would soon be restored to health.
At the last meeting of the Thames Hospital Board the district nurse to natives (Nurse Jarrett) reported 221 visits to natives at various points, ih- ' eluding the Thames, Kopu, Kirikiri, Puriri Valley, Omahu Paeroa, Marigaiti. Tui Pa, Tahuna, Kerepeehi, and Turua pas. The admission to Rotorua Hospital of two deserted native children suffering from congenital diseases was recommended. The chairman (Mr W. E. Hale) commended the nurse for the recommendation, and it was resolved to interview Sir Maui Pom are on the matter on the occasion of his forthcoming visit to Thames for the Jubilee celebrations.
; It is understood that 99 per cent, of the settlers in the Awaiti district have so far signed the petition asking for the constitution .of a*drainage board as stipulated by the Minister of Lands as a condition on which a grant was made for the improvement of the main Netherton roadside drain. The petition has not, yet been presented, but the contract was let by the Lands Department some weeks ago, when the intention of the settlers became obvious, and the work is now well under way.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council the assurance was given that the council had not broken the contract with the water supply contractors, and could therefore enforce the penalty for late completion of the work.
Permission to tyne-harrow the football playing area in the Domain was granted to the Paeroa Rugby Union, on the motion of Cr. Pinder, at las', night’s- meeting of the Borough Cof\ n cil.
The suggestion that the, Nf'ateaPatctonga road should {ne deviated across the flat instead of following the 'hills round Kaihere ] ias Taised a storm of protest in, the district, and the riding councillor is unable to gauge the strength of public opinion. ■On his motion the Plains County Council decided to take a postal referendum, and this resulted in 47 votes for the deviation and 14 against. The council decided to inform the Public Department of the views of the settlers and to inspect the proposed route.
