WORK OF HIGHWAYS.

WHAT TARANAKI IS DOING. LARGE SUMS SPENT. A sum of £51,860 was spent last year in maintaining the highways in the No. 7 (Taranaki) District for the year ended March 31, according to information given to the District Highways Council at its recent meeting at Stratford. The total mileage was 326, the average expenditure being £l5O 3s 6d a mile. The chairman (Mr T. M. Ball) said that the figure was high, but it had been considerably increased by the widening of many highways. He had no doubt that when this work was finished maintenance costs would considerably decrease. The subsidies and moneys granted by the Highways Board last year for work in Taranaki amounted to £37,693. The amount of work done during the year was as follows : Formation, 56% chains; gravelling and metalling. 2 miles 30 chains; bituminous surfacing, 44 miles ; bituminous macadam penetration, 11 miles 50 chains : survey, 23 miles 52 Ya chains ; plans completed, 23 miles 22 chains.

This year the council, decided to recommend proposals for the expenditure of £64,280 upon maintenance, of which the board was asked to contribute £44,117. Last year £36,000 was voted by the board which actually found £40,000.
