The first inter-union games in the Fiank Poland Memorial Cup competition were played in tine weather on Saturday afternoon. The draw was Piako v. Hauraki Plains at Ngatea, and Waihi V. Paeroa at Waihi. WAIHI V. PAEROA. A large number ol local people journeyed to Waihi to see the which was rather a. disappointing one for senior football. Paeroa had the heavier team, but failed to make the weight tell in the forwards. The backs were nippy enough, but showed no semblance of combination. The home team scored an easy win by six points to nil. The visitors lost several opportunities to score by overeagerness, and also by reason of faulty ’ kicking. Following were the teams :—

Waihi. —G. Tubman, Faulkner, T. Black, Saunders, Hake, Gilpin, Garvey, Howard, Craig, Bunting, Peacock, Rolieston, Walters, Price, Agnew. Paeroa.—K. Dean, A. Morrison, R. Swann, R. Rare, A. Mcßae, H. Wright, L. C. Masters, M. Poland, Tabu, ABuchanan, R. Shaw, V. Carrick, T. Greenhalgh, R. Smith, S. Wyatt. Swann kicked off for Paeroa, and by following up Wyatt secured and found the line. The line-out was scrummed inside Waihi’s twenty-five, and Tubman cleared. Dean marked, but his kick was short and Black opened up for Rolieston to make a good run. Peacock supported, but Swann beat him for the ball and a force resulted. An exchange of kicks followed until the home team carried play into the visitors’ twenty-five, where Dean cleared to the line. In a forward rush Howard gained ground, but Smith sent out to the line near Paeroa’s twenty-five flagCarrick secured from the throw-in and passed to Greenhalgh, to Smith, but Tubman cut iu and forced. In loose play a penalty went to Paeroa, but Swann’s kick went wide. A forward rush headed by Saunders and Garvey took play into Paeroa’s territory, but Masters saved with a kick to the half-way flag. Morrison secured in the line-out and sent Masters away, supported by Swann. A fault? pass by the latter to Rare negatived the movement and Rolieston cleared. In the second quarter Black followed u>> the opening kick and carried on to within a few yards of the posts, but Wright cleared; Hake- gained possession in the- line-out and carried up, but a. good tackle by Carrick enabled Swann to clear. A loose forward rush by the visitois was stopped by Faulkner, who found the line in neutral territory. From a scrum near the half-way line Masters secured and passed in to Shaw, who spoiled the advantage by kicking too hard and Tubman cleared. A breach in Waihi’s territory gave Swann another unsuccessful shot at goal. Patchy play followed until the end of the quarter.

On resuming after half-time a passing rush was stopped by Greenhalgh tackling Howard, the iesult beiirg that the ball shot out to Ma’sters, who cleared to the half-way flag. Rolieston broke away from a line-out near half-way and made a good run before transferring to Peacock, to Agnew, who dived for the line but was brought back for a. breach. Masters secured from a scrum in neutral territory and sent out to Wyatt, to Carrick. A faulty pass gave Price a chance to run across and clear. Rolieston gained possession in a line-out in Paeroa’s twenty-five, but his short kick was forced by Dean.

In the final quarter play was fast ami open, and Paeroa had a busytime defending. Agnew kicked off, the ball being returned by Dean with a long kick to Waihi’s twenty-five flag. Gilpin received from the lineout and after putting in a good run gave a low pass to Peacock, who failed to take it and Swann cleared. In 100 e play Price marked in Paeroa-s tei ritory, but his kick was unsuccessful. Tight play followed until Carrick found the line near half-way. Craig gained possession and passed to Walters, to Price, but Shaw tackled hard and Masters cleared. Waihi kept up the pressure, and after considerable tight play a five-yards scrum was ordered. A free kick for Waihi followed, and Black placed a neat goal. Waihi 3, Pa&roa 0- From the kick-out Peacock started a passing rush by transferring to Rolieston to Walters, to Howard, who beat the full-back and scored a good try near the corner. The kick by Black was unsuccessful, and the game ended Waihi 6 Paeroa 0. Mr G. T. Davidson, of Ngatea, was referee. WAIHI V. PAEROA JUNIORS. The first games in the inter-union junior competition for the Sharebrokers’ Cup were also played on Saturday, the match played at the Ra e " roa Domain being Waihi v. Paeroa. The gam;; attracted a large attendance of the public and good attendball was witnessed. The teams were evenly .matched, and play was fast and open and full of incidents, resulting in a narrow win for the home team by 9 points to 8. Paerca scored the nine points in the first half, and the result was in doubt up to the call of time. Following were the teams

Steel, Johns, Cunliffe, Smeaton, Ardem, Roberts, Angus, Robinson, Mathers.

Paeroa kicked off and followed through, but Stevens cleared. Snow returned by dribbling up the field, and Stevens forced. From the kickout Conolly secured and made a good run a.nd scored near the corner. Neil failed with the kick. Paeroa 3, Waihi 0. Fioin tho kick-out Banikat securCd and kicked to the line. Snow picked up following a line-out and dribbled the ball up the field, his final kick being too hard, and Stevens again forced. The drop-out was taken by Neil, who carried play into the visitors’ quarter, before sending out to Conolly, to Williams, the latter scoring a. neat try. Neil took the k’ck. but he handled the ball, and the kick was disallowed. Paeroa 6, Waihi 0. From the kick-out Waihi attacked, and the position looked dahgerou’s. A Paeroa player committed a breach which gave Dillimore an easy shot at goal, but he missed.

In the second quarter the Waihi forwards essayed a rush, but Overall cleared. Hawthorn secured and made a good run, but Rick sfived. McConnell gained possession, and sent out to Browne, who carried up. a five yards scrum resulting. The visitors hooked the ball, but E. Williams cut in and found the line. The throw-in was received by Barakat, who made ;i great run from near half-way and scored a fine try. His kick was unsuccessful. Paeroa 9, Waihi 0.

On resuming after half-time the visitors went on the attack, qnd took play into Paeroa’s twenty-five. Offside- play gave Dillimore a good kick at goal and this time he succeeded. Paeroa 9, Waihi 3. Towards the end of the spell a line-out in Waihi’s twenty-five the leather was secured by Moore, who made a good run and crosed the line, but he lost the ball and a force resulted. From the kick-out Salby sent to touch. In the final quarter Robinson kicked off. and -followed through for Overall to force. The twenty-five kick went out to touch. E. Williams secured from the line-out, and made a good run before sending out to RWilliams, who was offside. Dillimore failed with the penalty kick. Wttihi kept up the pressure, and Paeroa was compelled to force twice in quick

success : on. From a line-out near Paeroa’s twenty-five Stevens secured and kicked up the field for Angus to pick up the bail and dive over. Dillimore converted. Paeroa 9, Waihi 8. Mr E. Smith was referee. WAIHI CADETS BEAT PAEROA. As a curtain-raiser to the junior match a. Waihi Cadets team defeated a fifteen drawn from the Paeroa Cadets by five points to nil. A try was scored by Smoothy which was ccnveited by Shergold. Mr T. C. Arnold v.as referee. T.V. PIMMAKY SCHOOLS’ UNION. ANNUAL MEETING AT PAEROA. The annual meeting of the Thames Valley Primary Schools’ Rugby Union was held at Paeroa on Saturday morning, the president, Mr J. Elliot, (Hikutaia), presiding over Messrs G. H. Taylor (Paeroa), D. McPherson and Cole (Waihi), Percy and Aicken (Piako), and J- E. Insley (Paeroa), secretary. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report for the 1926 season stated that the first year of the union’s existence had been very successful. The outstanding event was the winning by the Thames Valley team of the Northern Roller Mills Shield at Auckland. Three representative matches had been played, and also a Possibles v. Probables game. Paeroa won two games and Waihi one game. Information had been received that Messrs W. Fleming and Son, Paeroa, had donated a handsome shield for annual competition between the sub-unions.

The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of Bs, but there w r as a.n outstanding debt of 10s 6d to the Thames Valley Rugby Union which would leave a deficiency of 2s 6d. It was proposed by Mr McPherson that the union go into the question of

arranging a comprehensive interunion sports gala at Paeroa at an early date for the purpose of raising funds to finance the team’s tour to Auckland to defend the Roller-Mills Shield. Messrs Taylor McPherson, Aicken. and Insley were appoined to make the preliminary arrangements.

It was resolved to leave the matter of the draw for the Fleming Shield in the hands of Messrs Taylor and Insley the first match to be on Jul?’ 2.

It was decided that it be a recommendation to sub-unions that the rules, especially those relating to the weight of players, should correspond with the rules of the Thames Valley Union.

It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Aicken seconded b?’ Mr Percy, that the Auckland Primary Schools’ Union be written to advising that the union did not see its way clear to conduct the Roller Mills Shield competition in this district, but would a.rrange to play an Auckland schools team in September in this district, and that it would be prepared to subsidise the expenses of the Auckland team up to 60 1 per cent. It was resolved to write to the Thames Valle?’ Rugby Union expressing thanks and appreciation for the donation of representative jerseys, and also to Messi’s Fleming and Son for the gift of a shield. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers for the 1927 season resulted as follows :— President. Mr J. Elliot ; vice-presi-dents Messrs Gl H. Taylor, D. McPherson, and Bullen ; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. E. Insley; management committee, Messrs Cole, Aicken, Percy v and the president and vicepresidents ; selectors, Messrs Aicken, McPherson, and Insley; manager of touring team, Mr Aicken. It was resolved that Mr J. E. Bigelok, Blenheim, be whitten to thanking him for valuable services rendered as the union’s first secretary. It was also decided to write to the Paeroa, Waihi, and Piako unions expressing thanks and appreciation for the- assistance and support given.
