MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD.
ROUTINE BUSINESS.
The monthly meeting of the Thames Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Monday last, the chairman (Mr W. E. Huie) presiding over Messrs J. W. Danby, V.. J- Hall, A. R. Robinson. P. E. Urenan, J. Lange, C. W. Kennedy, E. L. Walton, C. W. Parfitt, C. W. S. Flett, and the secretary (Mr G. Toneel. TREATMENT OF MAO 3 IS.
The Minister of Native Affairs wrote acknowledging thj board’s letter with reference to the cost of treatment and relief to Maoris. R was pointed out that of a total of £7ooo' a year available on the civil list for Native purposes a contribution of £3600 was made to the Health Department towards the ros. of medical treatment of Maoris. It was regretted that it was not possible to increase that sum in view of the many other urgent calls upon the balance of the fund. ADVANCE ON SUBSIDY. — The Department of Health wrote acknowledging the application for an advance on account of subsidy and advising that the Minister had approved of £1650 being paid to the board. It was pointed out that the extent of the advance was determined from the subsidy payable during the year, and represented the maximum amount which the Treasury had decided was to be paid, namely, sufficient to carry on with until one quarter’s subsidy would in the ordinary course have been received. The secretary said that under instructions he had asked for £2OOO but had received only £1650. RATE OF INTEREST. The Thames branch of the Bank of New Zealand wrote advising that from May 9 last the rate of interest on the overdraft of the building loan account would be increased from 6V 2 per cent, to 7 per cent., which was the present minimum rate. CAR FOR DISTRICT NURSE. Tire Coromandel Hospital Board wrote advising that it had a.greed to pay £7 10s per annum towards the upkeep of a motor-car for the district nurse to Natives. The chairman said that it was gratifying to receive such a favourable reply, but it was doubtful if the Thames board could go on with the project. RECIPROCAL ARRANGEMENT. A letter was received from the Coromandel Hospital Board advising that it was prepared to renew the reciprocal arrangement under section 72 of the Public Health Act for a further term of 12 months. The cha.irman said that the arrangement had worked quite satisfactorily, and the Waikato, Coromandel, and Tauranga boards had agreed with the .arrangement. Tn any case it was a fifty-fifty chance to the boards. So far the Waihi board had not come in. Mr Kennedy said it could not be expected that Waihi would come in. It was decided to renew the arrangement with Waihi. BENEVOLENT LEAGUE. The Hauraki Ladies’ Benevolent League forwarded a number of certified accounts and asked for the usual grant of £lO, which was granted. NURSE TO NATIVES. The following letter was received from the district health officer, Auckland :— “Your letter of the 12th ultimo to hand inquiring whether the question of the taking over of Nur.se Jarrett by your board has been referred to other boards in whose districts Nurse Jarrett operates. I have not taken this step, and, realising the difficulties that may arise in regard to the matter, I think it might be advisable to defer the question for the present and in the meairime carry on as we have been doing in the pant. I may have the opportunity of again bringing up this question with youi board at some future date.’ Mr Danby: It is only a stragetical retreat.
The chairman said it was apparent that little could be done to which Mr Brcnan said that he supposed the board would have to accept the position.
