SCHOOLBOYS: Netherton 38, v. Karqngahake 0. Hikutaia 3, v. Paeroa A 0. Ngatea 9, v. Turua 0. The first games in the third round of the Paeroa Rugby Union’s senior and junior competitions were played on Saturday under wretched weather conditions.* Heavy rain set in about 3 p.m. and continued steadily throughout the senior match. The principal attraction was the senior game Suburbs v. West, which ended in a victory for the visitors by five points to nil. Considerable intel - est was taken in the- game, as had West defeated Suburbs the team would have won the senior championship. As it is, Suburbs is the leading team by one point. The pouring rain and attendant disadvantages prevented good football from being played, but on the day the visitors were undoubtedly the better team and deserved their victory. Suburbs repeatedly gained the advantage in the scrums, while the heavy for- , wards were at home in the mud and made their weight tell. The West . forwards were outclassed, but the backs played a great game. The following were the teams,: — Suburbs.—W. Bennett, P. Corbett, A. Morrison. B. Rare, Mcßae, L. Rice, F. Tanner, A. R. Morrison, P. Buchanan, Tapu. Robson. S. Wyatt, T. Killgour. W. Vedder, M. Brown. West.—H. Smardin, G. Wdlls, R. Swann. H. Coldicutt. K. Dean, Nield, L. Masters, M. Poland, E. Neil, H. Edwards, E. Fisher V/ Carrick, Greenbalgh, A. Mills, R. Shaw. Swann kicked off for the home side and made an attractive opening by following up and sending out to Wells, who gained considerable ground before centring. Tight play in Suburbs’ twenty-five was relieved by Killgour finding the line near half-way. In a loose rush the visitors carried down, tight-play following in front of the posts. A Suburbs player committed a breach and Swann cleared. From a mark inside Suburbs’ twenty-five line Mcßae relieved, and Rice carried on. Coldicutt put in a good run find sent out near half-way. The throw-in went to Vedder. who carried play into West’s territory. A breach occurred in tight play and Swann, cleared. The Suburbs forwards returned to the attack, and Buchanan had an unsuccessful penalty kick- Mills opened up the/play and made a goo'dAun before kicking across to Wells. Wyatt st*p- ’ pd the rush, and the ball eventually out near the half-way flqg. Killgour received in the line-out and carried play into West’s quarter, but was brought back for a breach. Shaw made a fine opening, but was unsupported qnd Robson cleared. The second quarter opened with Mcßae heading a loose rush, and In the scramble that ensued West forced. Keping up the pressure, Wyatt returned play to West’s twenty-five,, but off-side play in front of the posts enabled Swann to clear. Tapu returned, and after tight play West again forced. From a line-out in West’s territory Killgour gained possession and passed to Morrison, to Buchanan, who dived over the linenear the corner. Wyatt converted. Suburbs 5. West 0. Blinding rain prevailed during the last two quarters, and the game became a mud scramble. Although Suburbs were compelled to force on two occasions in the last round the home team was unable to score, and the game ended in a victory for Suburbs. Mr D. G. McMillan was referee. THE JUNIORS. EAST V. NETHERTON. The junior game between East and Netherton attracted considerable attention, and ended in a. win for the home team by 9 points to 3. Netherton took the field with 14 men only, and although they had the heavier team there was a noticeable lack of combination, and the weight of the forwards was of little advantage. This game was also simply, a scramble in the mud. After several warnings W. Potter and L. Potter, of the- Netherton team, and G. Morrow and JGoonan were ordered off the field for unruly behaviour, in the final quarter. In a loose forward rush N. Neil scored for East, S- Williams failing with the kick. In tight play near East’s line Richmond picked up and scored for Netherton. Potter failed to convert. In a scramble H. Moore received from Mead near half-way, and by short-kicking and following up smartly scored a good try. This made the scores 6 to 3 in favour of East. In the last quarter a forward rush resulted in B. McGuire scoring a further try for East, and the game ended East 9, Netherton 3. Mr E. Smith was referee.

As a curtain-raiser to the, senior game the Paeroa School and West third-grade teams played a most interesting match, which resulted in a win for School. The only score during the game was an unconverted try by L. Masters. Mr J. Rackham "’as referee.

The Paeroa Primary Schools’ Union offened its competition at the domain on Saturday morning. The first match was played between Netherton and • Karangahake. The last-named team took the field with nine players only, and the match resulted in a. win for Netherton by 28 points to 0. Mr T. C. Arnold was referee.

The Hikutaia boys also played the Paeroa A team. After a fast and willing game the visitors won by 3 points to 0. Mr .1. Rackham wm referee.
