“The feeling of this Committee is a disapproval of frequency in the transfer of licenses in this district,” remarked the chairman (Mr F. W. Platts, S.M.) at Monday’s annual meeting of the Ohinemuri Licensing Committee. The chairman said that the previous chairman had already pointed out the Committee’s views, and he stated that the Committee would be more emphatic in the future.
A further batch of 22 unemployed men from Auckland passed through Paeroa this morning en route to the Ptiblie Works Department’s relief works on the Waihi-Wha.ugamata road.
According to the latest return of the Government Statistician it now takes 32s 4y 2 d, on the average, to purchase what could be purchased for 20s in July, 191-4. In other words, 20s to-da.y will purchase commodities to the value of 12s 3%d based upon 1914' prices. In September, 1926, the commodity value was 12s 3d, and in March last 12s 4d.
When voicing his objection to an adjournment of the. hearing of the application for a • license for the new hotel near Morrinsville at Monday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri Licensing Committee Mr R. MeVeagh, counsel for the applicant, drew attention to the heavy cost and inconvenience that would be occasioned his client. Continuing. Mr MeVeagh said : “I am not a cheap horse to feed, Mr Chairman and gentlemen.” A smile went round the Court which was increased when the chairman (Mr F. W. Platts, S.M.) dryly remarked : “But you get plemy of fodder, I expect, Mr MeVeagh.”
Mr H. Taylor, the travelling representative of the Farmers’ Trading Company, will be in Paeroa on Friday and Saturday next (10th and 11th Inst.) with a full range of samples of suitings. To mark this visit the company is making a special suit offering of 10s reduction on every suit ordered on Friday or Saturday.®
Exceptionally rough weather has been experienced locally during the last three days. Heavy rqin and strong nor’-easterly winds have prevailed, but no serious damage has been reported.
When applications for wholesaler’s licenses for P. Hague-Smith. Paeroa (Mr E. A. Pprritt). and J. W. Lethbridge and A. E. Green, Waihi (Mr R. S. Carden), were before the Ohinemuri Licensing Committee on Monday tlie chairman (Mr F. W. Platts S.M.) stated that the feeling of the Committee. was one of opposition to the granting of such licenses at the present time. The solicitors wore thereupon granted permission to withdraw the applications.
Further local prize-winners at the recent Waikato Winter Show at Hamilton include Mrs C. H. Jennings, of Bradley Street, who gained first and second prizes for hand worked rag mats, in the Art needlework section. Mrs Jennings, who is the mother of Mr P. J. Jennings, Paeroa, is over 70 years of age.
At most dances the usual practice is to rely on the good-nature of some person in the- hall to contribute dance music when an extra is required. The custom, however, was varied at the East Football Club’s dance last night, when three lads, R. Campbell (piano), G. Edwards (drums), and C. Nielsen (violin) contributed several enjoyable selections. The dancers generally applauded the boys’ efforts, which were much appreciated.
