LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The following vital statistics for Paeroa for the month o( May have been supplied by the local registrar (Mr W. E. Ward). Figures for tire corresponding month in 1926 are shown in parenthesis : Births 5 (4) ; deaths 1 (2) ; marriages 1 (1).

in conversation with Mr G. Rox, touring manager for the Humphrey Bishop Company, who is in Paeroa to-day he expressed his surprise at the progress the town had made during the past two years. In extending his congratulations to those persons who had helped with the town’s progress and development. Mr Rox said that he knew of no other town in the Dominion that had shown such marked advancement in so short a time.

The alteration in the- boundaries of the Tauranga electorate mean that it is about the same size as formerly, the loss of territory in and around Morrinsville and Matatmata being compensated for by the inclusion of portions of the Tauranga and Oninemuri counties. Roughly, the electorate is now made up of the whole of the Tauranga County, then across the Waihi plains to the outskirts of the town, thence through the gorge, taking in Waikino qnd Karangahake, bui excluding Paeroa, then following the railway line to Te Aroha, taking in the settlements en route, and also that town.

The terrific thunderstorm on Friday night last caused great commotion among a herd of about one hundred bullocks on Mr E. Allens’ property, Pukekura (states the Cambridge paper). The animals were terrified by the lightning and thunder, and in their mad stampede, carried away several chains of fencing. One young horse in its desperate fright rushed into the Waikato River, and was carried far down the stream. Indeed, it has not yet been recovered by its owner, though It probably got ashore lower down the river.

Mr. Geo. Rox, manager of the Humphrey Bishop Musical Comedy Company, was in Paeroa on Wednesday, arranging for the company’s farewell performance here.
