THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. THURSDAY JUNE 2, 1927. THE NEW ELECTORATE.

Much concern was occasioned locally when the finding of the Electoral Boundaries Commission was made known last week especially when it was learned that Ohinemuri Electorate had been expunged. The decision came almost as a bombshell, for, while it was felt tha.t some alteration would be necessary, no one dreamt that such a drastic change would be made. Naturally, the alteration has been freely discussed, and now that the first shock has passedl there is not much concern shown ; in fact, expressions have been voiced that the consolidation of the mining areas might be a commendable action. It would, however, seem that it was not the community of interest that was in the minds of the Commissioners when making the alteration, but that the alteration has come about solely on a population basis; otherwise places like Karangahake, Waikino, and the Waihi Beach would have been included. These places should, we consider, be brought into the Thames electorate, by reason of the great community of interest that exists in mining. Seeing that such a big alteration has been made in the boundaries of the Thames electorate, and that the name in no way fits the newly constituted electorate, a suggestion has been put forward that it should be rechristened Hauraki. To support this we have the names Hauraki Plains and Hauraki Peninsula, these two places covering most of the area, while Thames is but a very small part of this new electorate.
