A special meeting of the committee of the Paeroa District High School was held on Saturday afternoon, when it was decided to abandon the- idea of taking part in the school excursion to the Waikato Winter Show at Hamilton on Thursday next, June 2. Contrary to expectations, fine weather -prevailed locally over the weekend. Torrential rain fell nearly all day on Friday, and a strong easterly wind was in evidence, making conditions very unpleasant. The Ohinemuri River rose nearly five feet the greater volume of water coming from up-country. However, no damage has been reported. Early on Saturday morning the wind changed to a north-westerly direction, and from then onward the weather remained fine. Brighter sunshine, with a mild breeze, prevailed yesterday.

The easterly gale which was experienced locally on Friday was evidently much more severely felt in the vicinitj’ of Thames Road and the racecourse- area. Shortly after 2.30 p.m. on Friday the wind increased to hurricane force with driving rain. These conditions prevailed for about half an hour, during which the large number board on the Ohinemuri Jockey Cl nil’s property nearly opposite the people.’s stand wijs wrecked, and now lies in a tangled and smashed mass near the course. The structure, which cost the club nearly £3OO, was erected about seven years ago, and has withstood all the storms during that period. A large window was also blown in during the height of the, gale on the stewards’ stand. The houses on Thames Road got the full force of the gale, and although no serious damage has been reported the residents spent an anxious half-hour.
At Thursday’s meeting of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board a vote of sympathy was accorded to Mr J. B. Thomas, the Piako County’s representative on the board, in his serious illness. Strange) referred to the fact that as chairman of the Piako County Council Mr Thomas had played a leading part in the institution of the Power Board, and it was the first annual meeting that he had missed.
