MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS.

ENGINEER’S REPORT FOR MAY.

The following report was submitted by the acting engineer (Mr L. E. Shaw) at Wednesday’s meeting of the OJiinemuri County Council:—• “Ordinary maintenance has been ■carried out in all the ridings, the surfacemen’s time being spent mostly in repairing main roads. The crusher has not been working full time on account of the Komata Creek rising and flooding the gravel pits. During this spell the opportunity was taken to have several jobs t'ha.t were waiting attended to. The gravelling of Ryall’s Road has been almost completed. One day’s carti,ng with the council’s truck will finish this work and give, good access for the settlers.

"The cleaning of Hubbard’s Road drain, as asked for by Mr H. Poland, has been completed. The work of cleaning road drains in the Kaimanawa riding is proceeding satisfactorily, and several of the contracts being completed are presented for payment. . “It was found necessary to purchase a new belt for the crusher. The old one, being perished, was giving a lot of trouble. The motor truck had to be put into the garage for repairs, and is now in fair order, but very soon will need a., general overhaul.”

The- chairman moved the the matter of purchasing a suitable truck be left iu the hands of the engineer, chairman, and Cr. Joihnstone. Cr. F. C. Hubbard said that he was right up against the purchase of another Ford truck.

On the motion of Cr. Johnstone it was decided to defer the matter until next meeting, the committee in the meantime to make inquiries.

“The magazine-keeper’s residence is in need of several repairs. The sewerage and spouting require attending to, and the roof flashings havebecome loose and a.llow the rainwater to get under the iron and run down the partitions. The estimated cost of these repairs is £6.” It was decided to have the work carried out.

“The metalling of portions of Bridge Road and Farrelly’s Road, in the Waikino riding, is completed, and the settlers have expressed their appreciation of this work. “A footbridge has been erected over the Wahnata Stream for the use of the- children attending the Waimata School in the Waihi riding.

“Main Highways estimates for the yettr 1927-28 have been prepared and are at hand for the approval of the council.”
